Megia Dávila finally
took a stand against all the idiots who turn up for football matches under the
guise of supporters, calling off the quarter final cup tie between Valencia and
Deportivo after one of his linesmen was hit by an object thrown from the crowd.
Referees in Spain have to suffer such abuse every week without anybody doing
much to stop it, but after the official was cut just above the eye by what was
probably a coin, Megia decided to halt the game. The reaction of the two teams
though left a lot to be desired, Valencia president Juan Soler saying that it
was just a scratch and that the referee's decision was unacceptable, and Depor
immediately going to the Spanish courts to try and claim a victory after the
disciplinary committee decided that the rest of the tie should continue a week
later behind closed doors (nobody was able to determine who was the
perpetrator). Very few people seem to have spared a though for the poor
linesman who could have lost an eye if the object had struck a centimetre
lower, and Megia's actions should be applauded. The sooner that serious action
is taken to stop this type of lunacy, the better. (31.01.06) |
