So come on, own up! Who
upset them? Referees were in a foul mood this weekend as they jointly rewrote
the record books with 70 yellow cards and 11 reds. Last season's White Stick
award prizewinner González Vázquez was leading the pack,
producing 13 bookings including nine in the first half of the game between
Atlético and Sevilla. Someone had to double up, and the unlucky losers
were Sevilla's central defenders Escudé and Javi Navarro. Ramírez
Domínguez went one better, at least as far as red cards were concerned,
leaving Getafe with ten men and Athletic with nine in their match. And
Rodríguez Santiago also produced two red cards in the game between
Levante and Deportivo. Perhaps the most controversial decision though were by
Alvarez Izquierdo, even though he didn't send anyone for an early bath. The
rookie referee didn't endear himself to Recreativo coach Marcelino after
awarding Real Sociedad a dubious penalty, but then upset Real's manager
José Marí Bakero after ruling that the ball had gone out of play
before Kovacevic scored at the other end. (26.09.06) |
