Referees were in a
benevolent mood in the cup midweek, averaging just over four cards a game. All
that is except Rubinos Pérez, who managed to produce twelve yellows and
two reds in the game between Málaga and Real Sociedad, a performance
which indirectly led to the sacking of Real coach José Marí
Bakero. Rubinos jumps from nowhere to head our chart as a result. Rookie
referee Delgado Ferreira was the man who hit the headlines though, a very late,
controversial penalty in favour of reigning champions Espanyol upsetting the
Rayo Vallecano fans to the extent that he had to be escorted off the pitch by
the police. The general calm mood spread to the weekend, where the men in black
only produced two red cards, the lowest of the season to date. (31.10.06)
