Three referees were in the
limelight this weekend. Ramírez Domínguez upset the Espanyol camp
for sending off Riera, and then allowing a late equaliser by David Silva to
stand even though Jarque appeared to clear the ball off the line. However TV
replays showed that the goal was valid, and the hosts should be thankful that
he didn't award a possible penalty to their opponents for a high kick by Kameni
on Villa in the final minute. Pino Zamorano was criticised for the rigorous
sending off of Athletic Bilbao's Gabilondo, and also for not awarding penalties
to both the Basque side and their visitors Racing. And Medina Cantalejo got a
lot of stick for doing just the opposite, letting off Ronaldinho with a yellow
card for a dangerous tackle on Lopo, and awarding two hotly disputed penalties
to Barcelona and Deportivo. As we've said several times, it's a hard life being
a referee in Spain! (06.11.06) |
