Alvarez Izquierdo was in the
news again this weekend when he officiated the match between Zaragoza and
Getafe. Michael Laudrup's side seemed to be heading for a victory when Alvarez
awarded the home side a free kick outside of the area. Getafe wanted to make a
change and keeper Pato Abbondanzieri went up to the referee to ask for more
time to allow the substitute to take his position. But to his surprise the ref
blew his whistle, and D'Alessandro shot into the empty net. There were strong
protests all round that fair play was not observed, but the goal was allowed to
stand and Zaragoza saved a point. (27.11.07) |
