White Stick Awards

Although he wasn't in action this weekend, Undiano Mallenco held off his nearest rival Iturralde González to take our White Stick award this season. Iturralde was missing his mythical linesman Rafa Guerrero, who couldn't join him in Mallorca due to his ties to a regional federation, and only managed four bookings all night. Rafa himself was in the Bernabeu assisting Turienzo Alvarez, and he had tears in his eyes as he left the field for the last time before retiring. We will all miss him and we wish him all the best.

It was a strange night all round though, the usually tense last round of games free of any incident of note. Maybe it was the thought of impending holidays, but there wasn't even one red card in the ten ties, something unprecedented at this stage of the campaign. Even Osasuna had no problems, and they can now lay the ghost of the recent bad refereeing decisions after surviving the last day to ensure another season in the top flight. (20.05.08)
