The spotlight was on Mejuto
González this Saturday, the veteran referee being rewarded (?) for his
years of service with the big derby game between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
There were complaints from both sides, should he have given a penalty to
Barça when Albiol tripped Messi, did Messi control the ball with his arm
before scoring, and should he have shown second yellow cards to Xabi Alonso and
Dani Alves? Nothing that really changed the course of the game though, and
Mejuto can hang up his whistle at the end of the season (having reached the
maximum age of 45 for a first division referee) knowing that he did another
good job. One decision may have altered the result elsewhere though, Mateu
Lahoz ruling out a first half goal by Deportivo's Riki for a non-existent
previous foul. Depor were one up at the time, but Racing equalised late on.
