Luckily there no
controversial refereeing decisions in the last weekend of the season, although
things could have been different if Real Madrid had been closer to Barcelona.
Undiano Mallenco let Sergio Ramos off a penalty decision for a push on Caicedo
with Málaga leading 1-0, and just a minute or two later Van der Vaart
equalised. Barcelona won their game against Valladolid though to finish three
points clear of their rivals, so the result in Málaga was fairly
academic. On Saturday though La Liga said good-bye to Mejuto González,
the referee who shot to fame with the famous phrase "Rafa, no me jodas!" after
his infamous linesman Rafa Guerrero told him in Zaragoza a few years ago that
he should award a penalty to visitors Barcelona and send off a local defender.
That's not the end for Mejuto though, he has been rewarded with Wednesday's cup
final between Sevilla and Atlético Madrid as a curtain closer. He will
have to go a bit though if he is to catch this season's leader for the White
Stick award, the country's all time leading card-producer Iturralde
González. (18.05.10)
PS. Mejuto bowed out with
dignity in the Spanish cup final, and although he had to deal with a bit of
argy-bargy later on, he left the field a popular man. A lot of referees would
be happy to go the same way! |
