La Liga is back, and with it
our wonderful referees! Four of our old friends have left us, but there are two
new faces to replace them, including José Antonio Teixeira Vitienes,
brother of Fernando who already officiates at this level. Not too many
controversial decisions on the opening weekend, although we wondered whether
the pass-back rule had been changed without anyone telling us after
Pérez Lasa awarded an indirect free kick to Levante after Sevilla's
Fazio headed the ball back to his keeper Palop! And although it didn't change
the result, Pérez also gave the visitors a penalty for a foul by Cerra
on Perotti which was clearly outside of the area. The same happened in
Santander, where Delgado Ferreiro pointed to the spot after Barcelona's Maxwell
and Racing's Francis fought for the ball down the wing. Francis's dive could
have won gold in the Olympics, but Delgado fell for it. However Valdés
saved Tchité's spot kick, so that didn't matter either! (02.09.10)
