Referees were not keen on giving penalties in the first weekend of the New Year. Barcelona, Levante, Espanyol and Real Madrid all had what looked like good appeals turned down, although Fernández Borbolán did award one to Barcelona, which Xavi missed, and Almería and Rayo both converted the ones given to them. Fernández did give Barça a helping hand as well though against Elche, as at least the first goal scored by Alexis (and possibly the second) was from an offside position. Tata Martino’s side won 4-0 though, so even if those goals hadn’t counted they would still have taken the three points. (08.01.14).
