Last year’s white stick award winner José Antonio Teixeira Vitienes was in the spotlight this week in the game between Elche and Espanyol after he disallowed an early goal for each side for questionable fouls in the build-up, sent off two Elche players for second bookable offences, and awarded a hotly disputed penalty late on for the visitors. Teixeira mentioned in his report that he was hit in the chest by an almost empty “bag of maize” (did he mean popcorn?) thrown by a local fan as he entered the tunnel at the end. Lucky for him Elche won the game otherwise it could have been a full tin! (05.11.14)

PS We forgot to mention as well that Teixeira turned down Elche’s appeal for a goal when Lombán’s second half free kick came down off the crossbar, and appeared to cross the line before spinning away. No goal-line technology in Spain though, so difficult to judge.
