Martínez Munuera is not a popular man with Atlético Madrid right now after he failed to spot Celta’s Augusto Fernández clearly control the ball with his arm with an hour gone in their Sunday evening match. The Atleti players were still complaining when the play went up the other end and Mario Suárez tripped Nolito in the area, leading to a penalty which Nolito himself converted to set up a 2-0 victory. Matters were made worse when Martínez waved away a penalty appeal at the other end after Fontàs barged into Siqueira later on, and it was probably a sign of Simeone’s new-found maturity that he was only booked for (according to the referee’s report) “coming out of his area with his arm raised, making observations about a play”. The old Simeone would probably have had to serve time for what he would have done in the past! (19.02.15)
