A bit of fun and games on Thursday, with coaches (and former Spain hard-man defenders!) Abelardo (Sporting) and Paco Jémez (Rayo) livid with their respective referees! Abelardo was sent to the stands by Estrada Fernández for his protests in the match at Granada, but he may have had a point, Sanabria having what looked like a perfectly good goal ruled out for a non-existent offside, and then the Andalusians being awarded a dubious penalty after Barral fell rather too easily under a challenge from Mascarell. That decided the relegation battle in favour of the locals, and Abelardo ranted on about the officials in the post.match press conference. Jémez too had a dig at Bikandi Garrido after Rayo had two men sent off rather harshly in a 1-5 defeat against Barcelona later in the evening, but in his case he limited himself to saying that he didn’t actually see a referee on the pitch! His eyesight must be bad though, as he came on to the field of play at half time and menacingly looked Bikandi up and down from a yard or so away without saying anything! The referee wisely waited for a police escort before he and his colleagues walked off! (05.03.16)
