Not much controversy in the opening weekend of the season, although new boys Alavés were upset at Iglesias Villanueva when he awarded hosts Atlético Madrid a hotly disputed injury time penalty. It appeared that Laguardia’s tackle on Fernando Torres was outside of the area, but Gameiro had no qualms tucking home the spot kick anyway. Alavés responded in the best possible way however, team captain Manu García firing home the equalizer just a minute later! Munuera Montero was the only one of the three new referees to feature on day one, and Celta’s Iago Aspas felt himself hard done by when his strike against La Liga debutants Leganés was ruled out for a borderline offside. Munuera also produced the only red card of the extended weekend, sending visiting midfielder Timor off the bench when he came back on the pitch to confront a rival. (23.08.16)
