When does a game end? When the referee blows his final whistle, and not before! There were protests though from Las Palmas and Granada this weekend as their opponents Sevilla and Eibar both scored winning goals with the designated time added on already completed. Referees Martínez Munuera and Trujillo Suárez allowed play to continue though, and that was what counted. Martínez further upset the Canary Islanders when he awarded a hotly disputed penalty just minutes before that winning goal, and what looked like a third victory in a row converted to a defeat. Elsewhere Deportivo felt hard done by after Estrada Fernández disallowed Andone’s late equalizer against Athletic Bilbao for a non-existent offside, and Osasuna complained that Morata was offside in the build up to Modric’s goal. In their case though it didn’t matter that much as it was Real Madrid’s fifth, albeit that they did pull two goals back after that. (13.09.16)

PS We forgot by the way to congratulate Undiano Mallenco, who has now passed Iturralde González’s record of games officiated after he refereed the match between Málaga and Villarreal! A glutton for punishment?
