The new rule on penalties came in to force this weekend, Rulli giving away an early spot kick on Villarreal’s Sansone, but only punished with a yellow card by referee Clos Gómez. Last season that would probably have been a red, but the idea is that the penalty kick itself is sufficient to restore the goal-scoring opportunity, and a red card would be a double punishment. Tell that though to Eibar keepers Riesgo and Yoel, both of whom were sent off for giving away fouls outside of the area in the last two weeks. So if they had done the same inside the area, would they only have received a booking? As it happened Pato missed Villarreal’s penalty, so Rulli got away with it, a double reward rather than a double fine! Perhaps the saddest thing about all this though is that we may never again hear those immortal words which made a referee and his linesman famous several years ago, “penalty, expulsión, no me jodas Rafa,,,”!
