The big talking point this weekend was Real Sociedad’s disallowed goal late on against Barcelona, which would probably have meant a defeat for Luis Enrique’s side. A long shot from Carlos Vela hit the crossbar and appeared to bounce just over the line, andthe rebound span out to Juanmi who tapped it back in to the net. Referee Gil Manzano ruled that the ball was not in and that the forward was offside however, and without goal-mouth technology to say otherwise he waved play on. Television pictures afterwards showed that the ball possibly did not cross the line completely, but that Juanmi was a yard or so onside, and that the goal should therefore have stood. That overshadowed all other action, although rookie referee Ocón Arraiz (who was probably under pressure from his peers having not shown a red card to date) was probably a bit over the top to send off Betis defender Piccini at Eibar with only a quarter of an hour on the clock, and the more experienced Mateu Lahoz probably thought he was refereeing a “balonmano” match or something when he turned down two blatant penalty appeals for hand ball by Osasuna defenders against Atlético.
