Clos Gómez took centre stage on Saturday as Barcelona and Real Madrid played out their latest “clásico”, and the newspapers were full of the decisions he didn’t make rather than those he did. The referee turned down five or six penalty appeals in the first half, three by the visitors for possible fouls by Mascherano on Lucas Vázquez and Ronaldo, and for a hand ball by Rakitic, and a couple or so at the other end for possible hand balls as well, in particular by Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal. There were doubts too as to whether Luis Suárez was in an offside position when he headed in the opening goal, although multiple TV replays didn’t clarify whether he was or not, and it would have taken a brave man to disallow that one in the Nou Camp! All in all Señor Clos obviously decided it was a day to look the other way not to disturb the peace! (06.12.16)
