Up to this week the Spanish cup ties were fairly quiet on the refereeing front, but that certainly changed on Tuesday when Barcelona met Atlético in the Nou Camp for the semi-final second leg. Referee Gil Manzano sent off three players for second bookable offences, Sergi Roberto, Carrasco and Luis Suárez, and awarded a late penalty to the visitors which Gameiro missed. Barça qualified for the final 3-2 on aggregate, although the result could have been different had Gil not ruled out a Griezmann strike for a non-existent offside midway through the second half.
A bit of controversy at the weekend as well, Trujillo Suárez failing to spot a clear hand ball by Betis defender Pezzella in the Saturday game against Valencia, and Bikandi Garrido upsetting Málaga by turning down a penalty appeal when Charles was spectacularly pulled back by Trigueros, and then giving one at the other end when Sansone fell under a soft challenge by Rosales. He did however make up for it a bit by sending off Roberto Soriano when a yellow card would probably have been enough, and in the end the match ended 1-1. (15.02.17)
