When should a referee order a retake of a penalty for encroachment? There appeared to be two different interpretations this week, González González asking Villarreal’s Soldado to repeat his spot kick (Osasuna keeper Sirigu had saved the first, but the striker converted the second), but Ocon Arráiz allowing Iborra’s follow up goal against Athletic to stand, even though he was well inside the area when Iraizoz’s saved from Jovetic. Sevilla went on to win 1-0, and they remain in the title race as a result.
Well adrift of the rest, Osasuna already appeared to be doomed to relegation, although their situation wasn’t helped by a decision by Iglesias Villanueva to rule out what would have been a late equalizer by Alavés midfielder Camarasa at struggling Granada for a non-existent offside. All of that upset the visitors, and Iglesias sent off Katai for what he considered to be an elbow on an opponent as tempers frayed near the end. Even that he got wrong though, and the disciplinary committee overturned the red card card. Alexis was also given his marching orders however for two yellow cards in a row for protesting, but as the referee reported him for insulting him after that, the defender has been given a three match suspension.
