Only one game to go to the end of the season (plus the cup final!), and Gil Manzano is odds on to take the White Stick award this year after he produced another seven yellow cards in the 0-0 draw between Villarreal and Deportivo. One of those should probably have been red however, Depor keeper Lux a lucky boy to be let off with a caution when he aggressively pushed over Soldado after the two players clashed just before the break. Who knows what would have happened had the Galicians been left with ten men, but Lux stayed on to clock up a clean sheet which kept his team in the top flight for another year. A similar situation at Las Palmas, where González González should probably have sent off Barcelona’s Digne when he brought down Jesé as he advanced on goal with only six minutes gone. Barça won that one 1-4 to stay in the title race, level with Real Madrid who recorded a similar result against Sevilla.

A bit of controversy there too when Nacho opened the scoring by poking a quick free kick in to the empty net whilst the visitors had their backs turned setting up their defensive wall. Undiano Mallenco allowed it to stand however, and punters generally agreed that he was right to do so, and that the Sevilla defenders were at fault for switching off. Sevilla’s defeat means that they end up fourth whatever happens on the last day, Atlético Madrid now six points above them after a 1-1 draw at Betis. Their equalizing goal shouldn’t have been allowed by Alvarez Izquierdo however, Saúl Ñíguez playing on Koke’s free kick with his hand, and Savic getting the final touch from an offside position. Still, even if the strike had been ruled out the positions in the league table wouldn’t have changed. (16.05.17)
