Gerard Piqué was a lucky boy this weekend, Fernández Borbolán letting him off an early second yellow card for hand-ball in Saturday’s game at Getafe. To be fair to the referee though, several pundits couldn’t agree whether the defender should have been booked as Jorge Molina was being flagged offside at the time, and that may or may not take precedence. Referee’s call in the end, but others may well have seen it differently. Elsewhere there were several “was or wasn’t it a penalty” incidents, Undiano Mallenco in particular awarding one to Betis before changing his mind at the behest of his linesman and booking Durmisi for a dive, and rookie referee Alberola Rojas allowed Gerard Moreno’s early opener for Espanyol to stand, even though the striker was offside when he picked up the ball. No time to pour over those decisions though, the week five round of games starts tonight! (19.09.17)
