Back after the year-end break, and we already had the first controversial decisions in the midweek cup games. For the second tie in a row Real Madrid were awarded two penalties, this time by Estrada Fernández against Numancia, the referee turning one down at the other end before that, and also sending off Diamanka for the locals. But Espanyol were the ones who felt the hardest done by when Fernández Borbolán gave a spot kick to their opponents Levante, the Catalans protesting that the ball had gone out of play before the incident. Levante eventually won the game 1-2. (09.01.18)
