A major change on the refereeing front this season, with La Liga adopting the Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) system. It wasn’t used once however in the opening match, a rather dull 0-0 draw between Getafe and Valladolid, but it did come in to its own in particular in the game between Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla, with strikes by Embarba and André Silva ruled out, and a late penalty awarded to the hosts after World Cup referee Mateo Lahoz ruled at first that Embarba had been fouled outside of the area. We’ve been asking for it for a long time but, honestly speaking, the VAR is going to do us all out of a job! (21.08.18)
