A double header this week, with league games midweek and at the weekend, and the video-assisted refereeing system, VAR, once again featuring heavily. Atlético Madrid will be asking the disciplinary committee for explanations on how VAR functions though, and in particular when it can be consulted and when not, after Martínez Munuera failed to refer a possible penalty for hands by Real Madrid’s Casemiro during the latest Madrid derby on Saturday. A similar incident elsewhere with Eibar’s José Angel was accepted, and Atleti felt hard done by. It seems however that there were differences, most notably the distance the ball travelled before hitting the player’s arm, and Martínez had no reason to consult VAR if he felt it was accidental. Early days yet though, and we are all still learning how it works! (02.10.18)
