Real Madrid’s luck seems to have turned since Zidane flew the roost, and this weekend saw them scuppered by the VAR system as they fell to an ignominious 1-2 defeat at home to Levante. Rookie referee Cuadra Fernández, ably assisted by González González in the video room, overturned his original decision to award a free kick rather than a penalty to the visitors for hands by Varane when he saw that the offence was inside the box, Roger converting the resulting spot-kick, and then he disallowed goals by Marco Asensio and Mariano for offside after consulting the screen. Levante’s Rochina also had a strike ruled out though for the same reason, but in other times Madrid might just have salvaged something from this game. They have to live with it though, VAR is here to stay! (23.10.18)
