In this modern-day world of prestigious awards, big publicity, and of course high-stake betting, It’s strange that Spain doesn’t have an independent body (or even concrete rules) deciding on who the scorers of goals are. The official “Pichichi” awards are handed out by Madrid based newspaper Marca, largely (but not always) based on the referees’ match reports, and the same reports also serve the League and the Federation for their own records. This weekend for example Gil Manzano gave Real Madrid’s opener against Valladolid to Vinicius (his first official goal for the club!), even though his shot was heading for the corner flag before it hit Kiko Olivas and bounced into the net. Maybe that’s an issue that needs to be addressed? (06.11.18)
