Struggling Athletic Bilbao threw away points once again in the dying minutes, a controversial injury time equaliser by Valladolid’s Oscar Plano depriving them of a much needed win. The Athletic players protested to Sánchez Martínez that Plano had been well offside when he scored, but in fact the referee was right, as Dani García was sitting on the ground behind the goal line at the time. It seems that, under a little known rule (at least to us!), a defender who is off the pitch in that position is deemed to be actually on the goal line itself, thereby playing the forward onside! Hands up all of you who got the right answer… (03.01.19)
