The league's top two keepers
Cañizares and Cavallero met in the Mestalla stadium this weekend, and
between them they saved three penalties. It was the Celta keeper who came out
the better of the two though, stopping one in each half from Spanish
international Baraja and keeping a clean sheet. Cañizares did save
Vagner's late kick, but the midfielder followed up to score on the rebound.
It was a strange weekend for
penalties, with a record ten awarded but only four scored. Kovacevic's hit the
bar, but there were two more saves, Casillas from Iván Alonso and Burgos
from Dely Valdés. The Atlético keeper had just come on to replace
Esteban, who was sent off in the penalty incident, but unfortunately for the
Argentine rock star his acrobatics came to nothing as Fernando Sanz followed up
to score.
As well as Esteban, there
were three other goalkeeping changes this week. Molina returned after an injury
for Depor, López Vallejo replaced Reina again at Villarreal, and Sanzol
played his first game of the season for Osasuna at the Nou Camp. And only three
clean sheets, the aforementioned Cavallero, Racing's Ceballos and Mallorca's
Leo Franco. Not easy for keepers this week in the Spanish league. (08.10.02).
