A low scoring weekend, with
only 22 goals in the ten games and seven clean sheets from our "porteros".
Cañizares and Sanzol got two of them, the former in the win over Betis
and the latter in the 0-0 draw against Ricardo's Racing, and they move ahead of
Molina in the table. A goal-less draw as well between Valladolid and Murcia
takes both keepers higher up in the rankings, Bizzarri moving up to ninth and
Juanmi hovering just outside our table. The performance of the week though
undoubtedly came from Villarreal's Reina, who was one of two keepers to save a
penalty (the other was Málaga's Calatayud), and also set up a goal for
Sonny Anderson with an incredible throw out.
Several goalkeeping changes
this week, including both men in the match between Zaragoza and Albacete due to
an injury to Lainez and an attack of flu for Roa. The visitors came out on top
0-1 though, thanks to a good performance from Almunia and a bad mistake by
Valbuena, who dropped the ball in the path of an attacker for him to score.
Espanyol's Toni did likewise against Barcelona by the way, a game in which
Rijkaard decided to give Rüstü his first run out in the league in
place of Víctor Valdés. And finally Real Sociedad's Alberto made
his first league appearance of the season thanks to an injury to Westerveld, a
match which his side lost 2-0 as mentioned elsewhere on these pages. (15.12.03)
