Any doubt as to who Luis
Aragonés should take to Germany as his third choice keeper appeared to
dissipate this weekend when Valencia played Barcelona. With Casillas and Reina
already sure of their tickets, the debate is now down to the current leaders in
our chart, Cañizares and Víctor Valdés (Ricardo
permitting). However, whilst Valdés was giving away the softest goal of
the season to David Villa (the second softest was 19 games ago between the same
two players), Cañi was making some fine saves, including a reaction stop
from Larsson. The Valencia keeper is a bit long in the tooth, although his
experience could be an asset to a young squad in the World Cup.
It was a low scoring weekend
this time around, with only 21 goals in all. Only Armando got hit for a big
total, and as well as Cañizares, six other keepers recorded clean
sheets, including Casillas (Madrid), Pinto (Celta), Palop (Sevilla), Molina
(Deportivo), Leo Franco (Atlético) and Aouate (Racing). One change as
well, Prats returning to Mallorca's goal in place of under 21 international
Moyà. (13.02.06) |
