No doubt the talking point
of the week on the goalkeeping front was the fight between Deportivo's two
keepers Munúa and Aouate. The Uruguayan left his Israeli team mate with
eight stitches over his eye after punching him following an interchange of
words, and Depor coach Miguel Angel Lotina suspended both players. Lotina said
neither would play for the club again and drafted B team keeper Fabricio into
the side for the game at Villarreal, but things seemed to have quietened down
afterwards, and if the coach said that if they kiss and make up he will allow
them back.
They were not the only
keepers in the wars though, with Bilbao's Iraizoz and Racing's Toño both
having to leave the field shortly before half time with injuries, Aranzubia and
Coltorti replacing them. Iraizoz had only just returned after an injury
lay-off. Between the four of them they managed two clean sheets, and they were
joined by four others, our two leaders Víctor Valdés and Iker
Casillas, plus Diego Alves (Almería) and Abbiati (Atlético).
Casillas (who shook off a bout of gastric enteritis to play) has not let a goal
in now for 468 minutes, his best run ever, although he still has some way to go
to beat Cañizares's club record of 710 minutes from ten years ago.
Two other goalkeeping
changes to note as well, Lafuente making his league debut for Espanyol as
Kameni went off to play for Cameroon in the Africa Cup, and César
returning from injury to replace López Vallejo at Zaragoza. (14.01.08)
