At last Iker Casillas has
won the Zamora prize, the Real Madrid keeper ending the season well clear of
his nearest rivals. Bernd Schuster once again rested him for the last match
against Levante to avoid any surprises, this time third choice keeper Codina
being given an outing as a reward for his dedication to a hopeless cause, being
second understudy to probably the World's best.
Elsewhere though the men
between the sticks were given a complete thrashing in a record goalscoring
weekend, the only clean sheets coming from Racing's Toño and
Villarreal's Diego López, himself the understudy to San Iker last
season.
Many clubs with nothing to
play for did give a run out to their reserve keepers though, and there were
appearances for Cobeño (Almería), Abbiati (Atlético),
Pinto (Barcelona), Doblas (Betis), Alberto García (Murcia), De Sanctis
(Sevilla) and Cañizares (Valencia), who said farewell to Valencia but is
still looking for a new challenge at the ripe young age of 38.
All that meant that only one
goalkeeper played in every match, Recreativo's Sorrentino. That honour was
shared this year with Deportivo's Coloccini, the first outfield player to do so
in several seasons. (19.05.08) |
