A bit of an incident packed
weekend for keepers, with Valencia's Renan limping off with an injury before
half time against Athletic Bilbao, and Deportivo's Aranzubia being shown a red
card late on against Barcelona. Guaita came on to make his first division debut
for the Ches, but midfielder Juan Rodríguez had take over in the Nou
Camp as the Galicians had already made their three changes. His first job was
to pick Eto'o's penalty out of the back of the net!
A first division debut as
well for Sevilla's Javi Varas, who came in against Numancia as Palop had been
red-carded in the midweek cup tie, and Jacobo continued in the Getafe goal as
Abbondanzieri was also serving out a one match ban. Meanwhile Athletic's third
choice keeper Lafuente has moved to Sporting as cover for the injured
Cuéllar (even though the coach is keeping faith with Sergio
Sánchez for now) and Tottenham's César (ex Real Madrid and
Zaragoza) is favourite to step in for Renan.
So how has all that affected
our table? Javi Varas was one of six men to keep clean sheets this weekend, but
Víctor Valdés is was out ahead after the 5-0 win over Depor.
Goitia (Málaga), Toño (Racing), Riesgo (Recreativo) and Diego
López (Villarreal) were the others who managed to maintain their goals
against columns to zero. (19.01.09) |
