Víctor Valdés is out of the race for this season’s “Zamora” prize! The Barcelona keeper was stretchered off midway through the first half of the Wednesday night game against Celta, and it was later confirmed that he had torn his cruciate knee ligaments. That means that not only does he miss the rest of the season, but also that he won’t be going to the World Cup this summer (De Gea and Diego López are currently being touted as favourites to replace him). Furthermore, having announced earlier this season that he will be leaving the club in the summer, that could have been his last game for Barça.

That leaves the way open for Courtois though, and after another clean sheet against Granada, the Atlético keeper is already all but mathematically crowned as the best in Spain for a second season in a row. His side were one of seven not to let a goal in during the latest round of games, together with Barcelona (Pinto was an able replacement for Valdés), Athletic (Iraizoz), Elche (Manu Herrera), Rayo (Rubén), Real Sociedad (Bravo) and Villarreal (Asenjo). Only one other goalkeeping change, Guaita taking over at Valencia from the injured Diego Alves, who (as reported at the weekend) is likely to be out for a month or so. (28.03.14)
