Some big moves on the goalkeeping front this summer, with Real Madrid paying Chelsea €40 million to bring ex Atleti keeper Courtois back to Spain, and the Premier league club forking out double that to replace him with Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa. Elsewhere Sevilla signed Vaclik, which meant Sergio Rico was loaned out to Fulham and David Soria moved on to Getafe, and Espanyol’s Pau López signed for Betis after Adán accepted an offer from Atlético Madrid, (initially at least) as understudy to Oblak, himself replacing Axel Werner, who was loaned out to newly promoted Huesca. Two other new faces as well, Rayo’s Alberto García, and Valladolid’s Masip (although both had played in the top flight for other clubs).

Courtois though didn’t feature in Real Madrid’s opening fixture against Getafe, new coach Lopetegui preferring to bed him in slowly, and Keylor Navas started between the sticks. With Herrerín injured, Kepa’s obvious replacement was Remiro, but as he wouldn’t sign a new agreement with the club, Berizzo drafted in under 21 international Unai Simón instead. At the end of week one, five keepers managed clean sheets, Bono, Masip, Oier, Ter Stegen, and the aforementioned Navas. (21.08.18)
