Guti starred with two goals in the absence of the big stars.
2 - 3 Aug 2000 Ajax - Barcelona - Arsenal - Lazio
Barça won the tournament after beating Arsenal 2-1 and drawing 3-3 with Lazio. All four new signings played the second match, with Gerard and Rivaldo scoring to save the match.
4 Aug 2000 Valencia 0 - 0 Partizan Belgrade
Valencia started early as they play Champions League qualifier on 9th and 23rd August.
4 - 5 Aug 2000 Bayern Munich - Real Madrid - Galatasaray - Manchester Utd
Madrid lost 0-1 to Man Utd and beat Galatasaray 3-2. Figo made his debut and provided the winner for Raúl.

UNICEF benefit match. Mallorca were disappointing.
5-13 Aug 2000 Athletic Bilbao: pre season in England
Bilbao play four matches in England as part of their build up, as follows: 5th - Preston (won 1-3), - 8th Stockport (won 1-2), 11th - Derby (won 1-2), 13th - West Ham (won 1-2).
9 Aug 2000 Sporting Lisbon 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Madrid's new keeper César twice saved a penalty kick in injury time. He had just substituted Casillas, who was sent off. Roberto Carlos pulled one back for Real Madrid in the second half.

Traditional pre-season fixture in Cataluña in the town where the Dali museum is located. Flores used second choice players, who disappointed.
11 Aug 2000 Villarreal 1 - 1 Moroccan olympic squad
Played in Nyon, Switzerland. Moisés scored in the first half. Manager Víctor Muñoz used all his squad, playing different elevens in each half.
11 Aug 2000 Celta 1 - 1 Roma
Keeper Cavallero saved three penalties in the after-match shoot out to give Celta victory in the Quinocho memorial match. Batistuta scored for Roma and McCarthy equalised, both in the second half.
12 Aug 2000 Deportivo de La Coruña 2- 2 Lazio
Teresa Herrera trophy in La Coruña. Goals from Piojo (0-1, 43'), Víctor (1-1, 47'), Stankovic (1-2, 50') and Pandiani (2-2, 90'). Depor won the tournament in the penalty shoot-out, 4-3.

Friendly played at the Dell. Two more friendlies for Real at home on 19th and 26th. Idiakez and De Pedro scored for Real, Davies for the Saints.

End of Alavés pre-season 'stage' in Holland. They now play Logroñes and Mirandés at home (dates to be announced).
13 Aug 2000 Espanyol 2 - 1 Newcastle
The 'City of Barcelona' tournament featured the Magpies this year. Shearer opened the scoring early in the second half, but Rotchen and then substitute Oscar turned the result around.
13 Aug 2000 Real Madrid 2 - 1 Middlesborough
Friendly played in La Línea de la Concepción (on the border with Gibraltar) against Karembeu's new team. Figo scored very early on then Makele added another before half time. Brian Deane pulled one back in the second half. McManaman was left in Madrid.
15 Aug 2000 Inter Milan 1 - 0 Mallorca
Mallorca tried hard but couldn't score. Robbie Keane got his first goal for Inter, who used the match to try out new acquisitions and reserve players.
16 Aug 2000 Rayo Vallecano 1 - 2 Atlético Madrid
In a very unfriendly friendly match, Quevedo opened the scoring for the home side, but late goals from Salva and Correa gave Atleti the victory.
16 Aug 2000 Villarreal 5 - 3 Boca Juniors (Argentina)
Villarreal beat the South American champions in an exciting match. Goals came from Víctor (2), Marioni, Basualdo (og) and Jorge López (pen) for Villarreal and Barijho (2) and Schelotto for Boca, who were missing some of their big names.
19 Aug 2000 Murcia 0 - 4 Real Madrid
Friendly in La Condomina stadium to celebrate Murcia's promotion to second division A. Goals by Savio, Figo, Tote and Morientes. McManaman was called up but didn't play.
19 Aug 2000 Salamanca 2 - 1 Athletic Bilbao
First match for Athletic after returning from England (see earlier).Athletic's good run came to an end against a better Salamanca side. Toedtli and Quique Martín scored for the home side, Urzaiz for the visitors.
19 Aug 2000 Juventus 4 - 1 Rayo Vallecano
Rayo were three down at half time, and although Quevedo pulled one back in the second half, Juve scored again through Kovacevic.
19 Aug 2000  Lleida 2 - 1 Fiorentina
The second division club came back from behind to beat Italian giants Fiorentina after Nuno Gomes had given the visitors the lead.
18-20 Aug 2000 Betis - Las Palmas - Málaga - Recreativo
Colombino tournament in Huelva which Recreativo won with an Oscar penalty in the final. Las Palmas played Betis on 18th (1-2) and hosts Huelva played Málaga on 19th (1-0). Final (Huelva 1-0 Betis) and 3-4 play off (Las Palmas 2-0 Málaga) on 20th.
20 Aug 2000 Racing Santander 3 - 2 Roma
Racing still undefeated after beating the Italians, with goals from Bestchastnykh (2) and Amavisca. They also play Sporting on 19th (A), Sevilla 23rd (A), Salamanca 26th (A), Deportivo 29th (H), and Oviedo 2nd Sep (H).
21 Aug 2000 Real Madrid 1 - 1 Napoli
Madrid won the Rico Pérez trophy 4-3 on penalties after César saved two. Julio César let Di Vicino in for the first goal and Flavio equalised for Madrid in the first half. Morientes twisted a knee ligament and will be out for 6-8 weeks. McManaman was included in the squad but didn't play.
21 Aug 2000 Real Sociedad 2 - 0 Bolonia
Two goals from in-form Idiakez gave the home team victory.
22 Aug 2000 Las Palmas 1 - 0 Borussia Dortmund
Gran Canaria cup. Las Palmas won the competition with a first half Jarni penalty.
22 Aug 2000 Barcelona 2 - 1 PSV Eindhoven
Traditional Joan Gamper tournament, played over one match this year. Rivaldo (penalty) after a foul on Kluivert and Gerard scored for Barça, and Claudio got one back before half time for the visitors.
22 Aug 2000 Betis 1 - 1 Valladolid
Betis drew their presentation match with Valladolid. Youngster Joaquín scored just after the interval and Turiel equalised ten minutes later.
24 Aug 2000 Zaragoza 2 - 2 Parma
Zaragoza's first real test of the pre-season in this trophy match. The home side took a 2-0 lead by half time with goals from Jamelli and Juanele. However late goals by Fuser and Di Vaio sent the game into a penalty shoot out which Zaragoza won 6-5. Milosevic was given a warm reception by his old fans.
24 Aug 2000 Villarreal 1 - 4 Brescia
Another late arranged friendly played in Villarreal's La Madrigal stadium. Perugia, Brescia, what the hell? Didn't take it too seriously, but still lost heavily. Calleja scored the consolation goal at the end.
26 Aug 2000 Málaga 1 - 1 Barcelona
Played at La Línea de la Concepción, near Gibraltar. Movilla opened the scoring for Málaga just before half time and Dani equalised for Barça right at the end. Barcelona won the penalty shoot out 5-3 after Dutruel saved one of Málaga's kicks and Barça scored all five. Reiziger was sent off early in the first half, and Zenden picked up an injury which will keep him out for a month.
26 Aug 2000 Valladolid 1 - 1 Oviedo
Valladolid's official presentation. Fernando scored in the first half and Losada equalised in the last minute. Cuauhtemoc come on in the second half.
26 Aug 2000 Atlético Madrid 3 - 1 Flamengo
Trofeo Villa de Madrid. 33,000 turned up for this game (Atlético have sold 37,000 season tickets, the best figure in 10 years!). Luque, Salva (penalty) and Correa scored for the hosts, with Edilson pulling one back in the middle.
26 Aug 2000 Valencia 1 - 4 Villarreal
Played in Benidorm. Valladolid beat a Valencia team full of reserves. Víctor got a hat-trick and Craioveanu got the fourth, with Carew replying from the penalty spot.
26 Aug 2000 Sporting Gijon - Zaragoza - Real Sociedad
Triangular tournament in Gijon for the IV Villa de Gijon trophy.Real Sociedad won both their games 1-0 to take the trophy. Sporting and Zaragoza drew 0-0 in the other game. Idiakez and De Paula got the goals for Real.
26 Aug 2000 Fiorentina - Lazio - Athletic Bilbao
Another three-way tournament in Florence, the Cecchi Gori trophy. Athletic beat Lazio 1-0 (Urzaiz) but lost to Fiorentina 2-0. The hosts won the tournament after drawing 0-0 with Lazio.
26 Aug 2000 Cádiz 0 - 3 Betis
Ramón de Carranza trophy in Cádiz. One of the big pre-season tournaments, played over one game this year. Betis agreed to play free to help Cádiz, who are in financial difficulties.
29 Aug 2000 Betis 1 - 2 Flamengo
Part of the transfer fee for Denilson. He played on the other side this time and made both goals for Fla after Gálvez had given the home team the lead.
29 Aug 2000 Las Palmas 4 - 4 Aris Salonica
High scoring draw with no less than 4 penalties (referee Esquinas Torres, an early candidate for white stick award). Olias hat-trick, including 2 penalties, and Samways got the other from a free kick.
29 Aug 2000 Racing 1 - 0 Deportivo La Coruña
Friendly match in Santander. Preciado got the only goal against a second string Deportivo side.
29 Aug 2000 Osasuna 1 - 1 Athletic Bilbao
Another presentation match of a newly promoted team, this time against their Basque rivals. Athletic won the penalty shoot out 5-4.
30 Aug 2000 Numancia 1 - 1 Valladolid
Caja Duero. Warm up match in Soria for the two first division teams.Presentation of first team squad for Numancia fans. Rubén Navarro scored for the home side in the first half and Kaviedes equalised five minutes from time. Valladolid won on penalties.
30 Aug 2000 Celta 0 - 0 Oporto
Almost a local derby as the Galician side played the team from North Portugal. New signings Yago and Manolo made their debuts and Celta won the penalty shoot out 4-3.
30 Aug 2000 Valencia 0 - 0 Parma
The traditional Trofeo Naranja (orange trophy) was played at the end of the month. Parma won the trophy 0-3 on penalties after their keeper Micillo saved the first three spot kicks.
30 Aug 2000 Villarreal 3 - 2 Partizan Belgrade
The number of friendlies is taking it's toll on Villarreal, and new striker Víctor limped off and could miss the start of the season. Villarreal's goals from Moisés, Amor and Jorge López.
31 Aug 2000 Málaga 2 - 2 Werder Bremen
Málaga's last match of the pre-season was against the Germans. The home side came back from two down in the second half with goals from Ismael and Ruano in the last minute. Málaga won the penalty decider.
31 Aug 2000 Alavés 2 - 1 Dynamo Bucharest
Alavés came back from behind to win the 'Diputación Forestal de Alava' trophy. Jordi Cruyff made the winning goal for Javi Moreno. His father Johan was watching in the stands.
31 Aug 2000 Deportivo La Coruña 2 - 0 Girondins Bordeaux
An easy victory for Depor against the French, with goals from Fran and Turu Flores. Bordeaux were so impressed by their opponents that they bought Pauleta after the match.
1 Sep 2000 Athletic Bilbao 1 - 0 Feyenoord
First home match of pre-season against the Dutch side. With Guerrero, Urzaiz and Etxeberria on international duty and 3 youngsters with the Olympic squad, Athletic did enough to win. Goal: Larrazábal.
1 Sep 2000 Valladolid 4 - 1 Aris Salonica
Alavés playing elsewhere so Valladolid played Aris in the 'city of Valladolid' trophy. Easy victory, with goals from Kaviedes (2,1 pen), Pachón, Turiel. The manager of Aris, Charalambos Tene, tried to strangle referee Rodríguez Santiago at the end and was reported to the authorities.

Zaragoza's last match pre-season. Both teams used all their reserves in the second half. Goals from Sabino and Arpón.
1 Sep 2000 Las Palmas 2 - 1 Rayo Vallecano
Both teams wound up their pre-season with a closely fought match. Las Palmas went two up by half time with goals from Samways and Oktay and Rayo came back in the second half with a penalty scored by Pablo Sanz.
2 Sep 2000 Racing Santander 0 - 2 Oviedo
A bad match in which both sides were missing key internationals and fielded teams full of reserves. Losada and youth Rubén Reyes scored for the visitors in the second half.
3 Sep 2000 Valencia 1 - 1 Alavés
Played in L'Alcudia, Cúper used his reserve players in the absence of many internationals. Iván Alonso scored for the visitors, Juan Sánchez equalised and Valencia won 4-1 on penalties.
3 Sep 2000 AEK Athens 1 - 2 Espanyol
After looking at Italy etc., they finally agreed to go to Greece. With Tamudo and Velamazán already in Australia, Posse and Oscar played up front and got a goal each in the first half. Oscar's brother Roger picked up an injury and will miss the start of the season.
5 Sep 2000 Parma 1 - 3 Valencia
With a team packed with reserves, Valencia got their revenge on Parma. Vicente, Juan Sánchez and Carew gave them a 0-3 lead by half time, and Mboma pulled one back.
5 Sep 2000 Real Madrid 2 - 0 Santos
The annual 'Bernabeu trophy' took place the week before the start of the season. Real Madrid won with two second half goals, the first a penalty by Savio and the second a spectacular shot by Munitis. McManaman replaced Figo at half time to a standing ovation, his first appearance of the pre-season.
