The Spanish cup competition changed it's format for the 2000/1 season, and as the new formula was considered a success by the Spanish football federation, the 2001/2 edition followed similar lines.

The dates were brought forward due to the World Cup 2002, and the final was played in Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium on 6 March between Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña who beat the home side by 1-2.
