Betis are the new winners of the Copa del Rey after beating Osasuna 2-1 in extra time. In a match full of passion which at times boiled over into aggression, the Andalusians saw a second half lead pegged back, but a goal from young substitute Dani near the end gave them only their second cup title in their history.

The game got off to a lively start, but neither side created a clear cut chance until midway through the first half when Oliveira burst through only to scuff his shot and miss the target. The Brazilian striker should have scored as well after the restart when Joaquín's long cross found him unmarked on the far post, but once again he headed wide. And Joaquín himself hit the crossbar only for the attack to be ruled out for a previous foul.

Osasuna were hungry for a win though in their first ever cup final appearance, and Chengue Morales was a constant threat, just failing to get on the end of a Yanguas headed pass and then bringing a point blank save out of Doblas. But with a quarter of an hour to go Oliveira took advantage of an indecision between Yanguas and Elía, and squeezed between them to poke the ball in to the net.

The green and white end of the ground was in full song, but Aguirre brought on a new strike force, and within four minutes of entering the fray Australia's John Aloisi rose above the defence to head an equaliser from Delporte's cross. Now the far end of the Calderón stadium was awash with red, and both groups of supporters vied for dominance as the game went in to extra time, the friendly atmosphere in the stands not reflecting the bad tempers being shown on the pitch.

Serra Ferrer had been toying with bringing on Benjamín or Denilson, but finally opted for local boy Dani, who had only just returned to the squad after a string of injuries. It proved to be the decision which won the match, as the young striker ran on to Varela's through ball with six minutes to go to fire a shot across Elía.

There was still time for the Pamplona based side to force the game to a penalty shoot out, but with the game in the first of six additional minutes, La Liga's most booked player Pablo García cynically hacked down Joaquín and earned himself a red card from referee Pérez Burrull. Still Doblas had to make a vital save from Aloisi in the dying seconds, but almost immediately the referee blew the final whistle and it was all over.

Betis had rounded off their best ever season, and club president Don Manuel Ruiz de Lopera celebrated with the players on the pitch after the King of Spain handed over the trophy. Osasuna had the consolation of knowing that they will be in the UEFA cup next season after their opponents had already qualified for the more important Champions' League, but that evening was not the time to tell the players and the fans that.
