New signings David Villa and Kluivert were both on target as Valencia recorded a comfortable win against Gant in their second leg tie. After a score-less draw in the first leg, Quique Flores put out a strong side with Edu making his debut and Villa and Kluivert up front. And within six minutes the ex Zaragoza striker had his name on the scoresheet after picking up a loose ball following a corner to beat Herpoel. The visitors came close to equalising when Mamouni took advantage of a mistake by Ayala to win through and hit the post, but Kluivert could have increased the lead before the break when he headed just wide.

Although the Spaniards continued to dominate in the second half, there was still a chance that the Belgian side could have got the vital away goal as their opponents tired. But ten minutes from the end Kluivert picked up the ball and ghosted past three defenders before thundering a shot past the keeper. The crowd got to their feet, the Dutchman already pencilled in as the new hero at the Mestalla stadium.
