Pre-season Fixtures

As usual there will be an intensive programme of pre-season matches, this year starting mid July and going on to the end of August, when the league season begins again. We set out below the most important games involving La Liga clubs, and will be publishing regular updates when more information is known. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. See also friendly fixtures section for matches which took place during the league season. (29.08.09)

16 Jul - 12 Aug Athletic Bilbao summer programme
First team to start the pre-season as they have an important Europa League qualifier at the end of July. Played in Guadiana trophy in Portugal vs Benfica 16/07, L 2-1 (Saviola 2 / Toquero), and Anderlecht 18/07, D 2-2 (De Marcos, Gurpegui). Met San Roque in Cádiz 22/07, W 0-1 (Etxeberría pen) before Europa League vs BSC Young Boys (lost first leg at home 0-1, but went through 1-2 in second leg - see separate section). Took part in triangular tournament in Portugalete 02/08, L 1-0 to Sporting Gijón, W 0-1 vs hosts (De Marcos), then played Sporting again in Luarca 12/08, L 2-0 (Diego Castro, Castillo og). End pre-season with Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona (see below).
18 Jul - 13 Aug Atlético Madrid summer programme
Started pre-season in Segovia, with opener 18/07 against regional side Colmenar Viejo, W 0-3 (Cléber, Domínguez, Pacheco). Played Benfica in Lisbon 21/07, W 1-2 (Raúl García, Forlán pen), then on to Amsterdam tournament, where they met Ajax 24/07, D 3-3 (Simao, Agüero, Maxi) and Sunderland 26/07, L 2-0 (Richardson 2). Started August with Emirates Cup, played Arsenal 01/08, L 2-1 (Arshavin 2 / Pacheco) and PSG 02/08, D 1-1 (Agüero pen / Giuly), then travelled to play Liverpool 08/08, W 1-2 (Lucas Leiva / Agüero, Forlán). Met Deportivo 10/08 in their Teresa Herrero trophy, D 1-1 (Iván Pérez / Jurado pen - W 3-4 on penalties - see below), and visited Castellón 13/08, W 0-1 (Sinama-Pongolle). Then have to concentrate on Champions League qualifiers (see below for details).
18 Jul - 21 Aug Sevilla summer programme
Started close to home with friendlies against regional teams Roteña 18/07, W 0-7 (Carreño, Koné (2), Navas, Alfaro (2), José Carlos), and Conil 19/07, W 0-1 (Chevantón). Hosted Peace Cup, with fixtures against Juventus 24/07, L 1-2 and Seongnam 26/07, D 0-0 (see below), and put together a last minute friendly against Olympique Lyon in Coria on 30/07 after both were eliminated, W 1-0 (Chevantón). Fitted in game against regional side Chiclana 05/08, W 0-7 (Romaric 3, Alfaro 2, Chevantón, Koné), then played in triangular tournament in Palermo together with Mallorca on 08/08, L 1-0 vs Mallorca (Mario Suárez), L 1-0 vs Palermo(Miccoli). Beat Valencia 2-0 (Adriano, Koné) on14/08 in Cádiz's Ramón de Carranza trophy and went on to win the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Deportivo (Escudé) (see below), Finally hosted their own Trofeo Antonio Puerta against their newly promoted neighbours Xerez on 21/08, W 2-1 (José Carlos, Perotti / Michel).
19 Jul - 23 Aug Villarreal summer programme
Scandalous 0-27 win 19/07 in first game against Catalan regional team Navata (Pereira 7, Llorente 4, Marcos Rubén 4, Escudero 3, Pires 2, Fuster 2, Montero 2, Marcos, Cani, Matilla)! Take part in Peace Cup in Sevilla with games against Al-Ittihad 26/07, D 1-1 (Raúl) and Liga de Quito 28/07, W 4-2 (Ronaldo pen, Granero, Metzelder, Negredo), and semi-final in Sevilla against Juventus 31/07, L 1-2 (Ronaldo pen / Cannavaro, Salihamidzic) (see below). Toured Canada and USA with fixtures against Toronto 07/08, W 0-5 (Raúl 2, Ronaldo, Benzema, Robben), and DC United 09/08, W 1-3 (Higuaín 2, Robben). Invited to Real Sociedad centenary celebrations in the Anoeta stadium 15/08, W 0-2 (Benzema, Sneijder). Friendly against Borussia Dortmund 19/08 in Germany, W 0-5 (Granero, Robben, Higuaín, Kaká pen, Raúl), then hosted Bernabeu trophy 24/08 against Rosenborg, W 4-0 (Benzema 2, Lass, Raúl) - see below.
21 - 27 Jul Under 19 European Championship
Spain's under 19 side failed to win back their title this summer in the Ukraine. Group games 21/07. Turkey, W 2-1; 24/07. Serbia, L 1-2; 27/07, L 0-1. France. Spain eliminated at group stage. See separate section for details.
22 Jul - 15 Aug Valencia summer programme
Pre-season in Ermelo (Holland), starting against Den Haag 22/07, W 1-4 (Nacho González, David Navarro, Michel, Jordi Alba). Triangular tournament hosted by Borussia Dortmund 25/07, D 1-1 vs Dortmund (Jordi Alba) and D 0-0 vs Udinese. Won tournament on penalties. Then played Werden Bremen in Meppen on 28/07, D 2-2 (Zigic 2). Travelled to UK to meet Cardiff 01/08, W 0-2 (Zigic, Joaquín) and Manchester United 05/08, L 2-0 (Rooney, Cleverley), then hosted Arsenal in the Trofeo Naranja 08/08, W 2-0 (Michel, Villa). Played in Alzira versus Al Ahn 11/08, D 1-1 (Isco), before taking part in Cádiz's Ramón de Carranza trophy Lost 0-2 to Sevilla 14/08, and also lost 3/4 play-off to the hosts by 1-2 (Pablo / Tristán, López Silva) the following day. End pre-season with Europa Cup play-offs 20 and 27 Aug (see separate section).
22 Jul - 15 Aug Betis summer programme
Saving money after relegation, with games against local opponents Atlético Sanluqeño 22/07, W 0-3 (Pavone, Damián, Gavilán), Roteña 25/07, W 0-5 (Juanma, Sergio García 2, Richard og, Carlos García), San Roque 29/07 (abandoned due to floodlight failure at 0-0), and Cacereño 01/08, W 1-2 (Moreno, Odonkor pen). Won Colombino trophy after playing Zaragoza 08/08, W 4-2 (Pavone 2, Juanma, Sergio García / Jorge López 2) and hosts Recreativo 09/08, D 0-0. Played in Puma Trophy in La Manga, 13/08 D 0-0 vs Murcia, and on15/08 met Tenerife, L 0-2 (Juanlu, Nino). Ended 18/08 with 1-2 win at Poli Ejido (Arzu, Rodri), and 23/08 with 0-1 win at Jaén (Sergio García).
23 Jul - 20 Aug Mallorca summer programme
Pre-season training in Kossen (Austria), and whilst there play TSV Stein 23/07, W 0-6 (Ab) (Varela 3, Ramis, Webó, Víctor), 1860 Munich 25/07, L 1-0, Wolfsburg 27/07, L 3-1 (Aduritz), and Rodengo Brescia 31/07, W 2-1 (Mario Suárez 2). Won triangular tournament in Palermo 08/08, beating Sevilla 1-0 (Mario Suárez) and then the hosts 0-2 (Webó, Martí), and visited AEK Athens on 12/08, W 1-3 (Martí, Aduriz, Víctor). Invited to Albacete presentation game on 20/08, L 3-2 (Merino, Sales, Belencoso / Víctor pen, Aduriz), and ended at Levante 23/08, L 2-0 (Rubén, Xisco Nadal).
23 Jul - 22 Aug Racing Santander summer programme
Pre-season in Rees, Germany (near Holland border) with matches against Koblenz 23/07, L 1-0, Oberhausen 27/07, L 1-0 and Caambur Leuwarden 30/07, W 0-5 (Arana, Tchité 2, Toni Moral, Juanjo). Return to Spain for away matches at Oviedo 05/08, W 0-1, (Oscar Serrano), Real Unión 08/08, L 2-0, Naples 11/08, D 1-1 (Juanjo), Valladolid 16/08, W 0-1 (Juanjo), Sporting 18/08, W 1-0 (Munitis) and Barakaldo 22/08, W 0-2 (Sarmiento, Luisma).
23 Jul - 23 Aug Deportivo summer programme
Have put off trip to Mexico to next year due to flu epidemic, and started in Portugal with games against Ribeirao 23/07, W 0-1 (Mista) and Feirense 24/07, D 1-1 (Filipe). Won Luis Otero triangular trophy in Pontevedra 29/07 with 0-0 draw vs Al Ittihad and 0-2 win over hosts (Mista, Riki). Visited Toulouse 31/07, L 2-0 and Olympique Lyon (in Aix-les-Bains), D 2-2 (Riki pen, Juca). Returned to Portugal to play Vitoria Guimareas 07/08, L 2-0, and Leixoes 08/08, D 0-0, and then met Atlético Madrid 12/08 in their own Teresa Herrera trophy, D 1-1 (Iván Pérez / Jurado pen), Atlético won 3-4 on penalties. On to Cádiz afterwards for the Ramón de Carranza trophy (see below), where they played the hosts on 13/08, W 1-3 (Toedtli / Sergio, Bodipo, Mista). Lost 0-1 to Sevilla in final, 15/08. Invited to Pamplona to face Osasuna in their presentation match 23/08, L 4-2 (Sergio 2, Masoud, Vadocz / Juan Rodríguez, Riki).
24 Jul - 2 Aug Peace Cup, Sevilla
Fourth edition of the Peace Cup takes place in and around Sevilla this year. Twelve sides have been divided into four groups of three, who play off amongst themselves. Winners of the groups will play the semi-finals on 31 July, with the final scheduled for 2 Aug. Matches take place in Sevilla (Olympic stadium), Madrid (Bernabeu), Málaga, Huelva and Jerez.

Travelled to USA West coast, with matches against LA Galaxy 01/08, W 1-2 (Beckham / Pedro, Jeffrén), Seattle Sounders 05/08, W 0-4 (Messi 2, Jeffrén, Pedro), and Chivas (in San Francisco) on 08/08, D 1-1 (Morales / Bojan). Gamper tournament 19/08 versus Manchester City, L 0-1 (Petrov), Spanish Super Cup v Athletic Bilbao 16/08 (W 1-2) and 23/08 (W 3-0), and European Super Cup v Shaktar Donetsk in Monaco on 28/08 (W 1-0). Inauguration game of new stadium at Cornellà against Liverpool on 02/08, W 3-0 (Luis García, Ben Sahar 2), then visited Naples on 05/08, D 0-0. Sudden death of captain Dani Jarque in Florence cut short their tour of Italy and friendly against Castellón in Sant Adria on 16/08. Decided though to play at Girona in Costa Bravo trophy on 22/08, W 1-2 (Manga / Iván Alonso, Luis García).

Triangular tournament in Irún with hosts Real Unión and Real Sociedad 18/08, Real Unión 0 - Real Sociedad 0; Real Sociedad 1 - Osasuna 1 (Agirretxe / Juanfran); Real Unión 1 - Osasuna 1 (Romo pen / Vadocz); Osasuna won trophy. 29 Jul - 22 Aug Sporting Gijón summer programme
After game against reserves, played Gimnastica Torrelavega 29/07, L 1-0, and went on to win triangular tournament in Portugalete 02/08, beating hosts 0-2 (Bilic, Camacho) and then Athletic Bilbao 1-0 (Barral). Visited Marino 05/08, W 0-1 (Kike Mateo) before leaving Spain to play Birmingham 08/08, D 0-0. Met Athletic again in Luarca 12/08, W 2-0 (Diego Castro, Castillo og), and played Racing 18/08, L 1-0 (Munitis). Invited to Celta Vigo's Ciudad de Vigo Trophy 20/08, L 3-0 (Saulo, Juanlu, Abalo), and ended at Salamanca 22/08, W 0-2 (Barral, Diego Castro).
30 Jul and 6 Aug Europa League third qualifying round
Competition which replaces the UEFA Cup. Spanish cup runners up Athletic Bilbao enter at the third qualifying round, with games home and away against Swiss side BSC Young Boys. Lost first leg 0-1, but overturned the result with 1-2 victory in second leg (Llorente, Muniain). They now play in the final qualifying round 20/08 and 27/08 together with Villarreal and Valencia. 1 - 15 Aug Real Sociedad summer programme
Friendlies against Anaitesuna 01/08, W 0-5, (Agirretxe 2, Griezmann 2, Ansotegui), Barakaldo 05/08, W 1-3 (Zurutuza, Griezmann 2). Then Teide trophy in Tenerife on 09/08, W 0-1 (Jonathan Estrada), friendly against neighbours Eibar 12/08, W 1-2 (Agirretxe, Griezmann) and their own centenary celebrations in the Anoeta stadium against Real Madrid on 15/08, L 0-2 (Benzema, Sneijder). Took part in triangular tournament in Irún 18/08 with hosts Real Unión and Osasuna (see Osasuna section for results), and ended pre-season at Berazubi against Numancia on 22/08, D 0-0.
1 - 23 Aug Xerez summer programme
Still in state of shock after recent promotion, and have little organised. Played at Arcos 01/08, W 2-3 (Momo, Michel, Bermejo) and Puerto Real 05/08, W 0-1 (Gioda). Beat Mouscron 2-0 in the Trofeo Vendimia in Jerez on 18/08 with goals from Antoñito and Rosillo. Invited to Sevilla's Antonio Puerta trophy 21/08, L 2-1 (Juan Carlos, Perotti / Michel) and met Recreativo in Arcos on 23/08, W 4-0 (Armenteros 2, Abel, Oladi).
5 - 15 Aug Tenerife summer programme
Took part in Santa Cruz tournament against Tenisca 31/07, W 3-0 (Mikel Alonso, Nino 2). Second game against Select XI suspended due to fires in Las Palmas. Played Marino 05/08, W 1-5 (Angel 2, Omar 2, Kome), then Teide trophy game against Real Sociedad in La Orotava 09/08, L 1-0 (J Estrada) and invited to Elche's Puma trophy 11/08, L 4-1 (Santos, Saúl, Javi Lara, Perera / Omar). Played Cartagena 13/08, L 3-1 (Víctor 2, Longas / Aarón) and met Betis 15/08 in La Manga, W 0-2 (Juanlu, Nino) and Lanzarote 19/08, W 5-0 (Angel 4, Omar).
7 - 9 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
Recreativo hosted 45th edition of major summer competition. Three way tournament again this year, with Zaragoza and Betis invited.

08/08: Betis 4 - Zaragoza 2 (Pavone 2, 1 pen, Juanma, Sergio García / Jorge López 2);

Spain played Macedonia away in a pre-season warm up prior to the World Cup qualifiers next month. W 2-3 (Torres, Piqué, Riera). See separate section for more details.
12 Aug Teresa Herrera trophy, La Coruña
64th edition of the tournament scheduled again this summer. Mexican side Tigres de Monterrey pulled out late on, and Newcastle also turned them down, so played one match against Atlético Madrid to decide the winners. Game ended 1-1 (Iván Pérez / Jurado pen), Atlético winning 3-4 on penalties.
13 - 15 Aug Ramón de Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Cádiz once again hosted this prestigious trophy, which this year celebrated it's 55th edition. Club celebrating promotion back to second division A inviting top La Liga sides Deportivo, Sevilla and Valencia.
Games as follows:
13/08: Cádiz 1 - Deportivo 3 (Toedtli / Sergio, Bodipo, Mista);
14/08: Sevilla 2 - Valencia 0 (Adriano, Koné).

16 and 23 Aug Spanish Super Cup
Two leg fixture between league champions Barcelona and cup runners up Athletic Bilbao (Barcelona were also the cup winners).
First leg 16/08 in San Mamés stadium, Athletic 1 - Barcelona 2 (De Marcos / Xavi, Pedro).
Return in the Nou Camp 23/08. Barcelona 3 - Athletic 0 (Messi 2, Bojan).

19 Aug Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
44th edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament. Rivals were big spending Manchester City. Despite debut of Ibrahimovic, Barça lost 0-1 thanks to a goal from Petrov.
19 and 25 Aug Champions' League third qualifying round
Under the new format, only Atlético Madrid enter the competition at this stage. Take part in one of the five "non-champions" play-offs, facing Panathinaikos.

Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal and Valencia had to play a qualifying round to reach the league stage of the new Europa League.

24 Aug XXXI Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Real Madrid hosted this tournament once again. Italian giants AC Milan scheduled to play on 25th, but clash with Atlético's Champions League qualifier meant game has to be played a day earlier. Milan couldn't make it, so Rosenborg replaced them. Madrid won 4-0, with goals from Benzema (2), Lass and Raúl.
28 Aug European Super Cup
Champions League winners Barcelona played UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk in this annual fixture in Mónaco. Barça won 1-0 thanks to an extra time goal from substitute Pedro. See separate section for more details.
End Aug Catalonia Cup
Playing this tournament again in the summer. Regional division sides play two rounds in May/June, and then continue from mid August.
Quarter finals: Gramanet 3 - Nàstic 1; L'Hospitalet 2 - Girona 1. Barcelona and Espanyol enter at the semi-final stage against Gramanet and L'Hospitalet (ties to be decided).
