Pre-season Fixtures

As usual there will be an intensive programme of pre-season matches, this year starting early July and going on beyond the 19th August, when the league season begins again this year. We set out below the most important games involving La Liga clubs, and will be publishing regular updates when more information is known. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. See also friendly fixtures section for sundry matches which are taking place during the league season. 3 - 15 Jul Under 19 European Championship
Spain's under 19 side are defending their title in this summer's edition, which is being played in Estonia. Opponents at the group stage were Greece 03/07, W 2-1 (Jesé, Derik), Portugal 06/07, D 3-3 (Jesé 3), and Estonia 09/07, W 0-2 (Denis, Alcácer). Played France in semi-finals, 12/07, D 3-3 (Deulofeu 2, Alcácer), W 4-2 pso. Final 15/07 against Greece, W 1-0 (Jesé). See separate section for details.
13 Jul - 1 Aug Olympic Games
Spain qualified for the Olympic Games football tournament for the first time in twelve years, and will be putting out a squad based on last season's under 21 team who were proclaimed European champions. Warm up games in Gran Canaria (Maspalomas) against Senegal, L 0-2, and in Cádiz against Mexico 18/07, W 1-0 (Javi Martínez). Group fixtures in Great Britain are against Japan 26/07 (Glasgow), L 0-1, Honduras 29/07 (Newcastle), L 0-1, and Morocco 01/08 (Manchester), D 0-0. Spain knocked out at the group stage. 13 Jul - 15 Aug Athletic Bilbao summer programme
First team to start back after vacations, as they have to play Europa League third round qualifiers. Games confirmed in France against Olympique Lyon 13/07 (in Grenoble), W 1-2 (Zeffane / Aduríz 2, 1 pen), in Morocco against Raja Casablanca 17/07, L 3-1 (Metouali pen, Karrouchy, Iajour / Toquero) and in Poland for the Turniej Wroclaw Polish Masters, against PSV Eindhoven 21/07, L 1-0 (Wijnaldum), and hosts Slask Wroclaw on 22/07, W 0-1 (Susaeta). Set up another friendly a t Lille 27/07, L 3-1 (Ibai Gómez) prior to E-League games against Slaven Koprivnica on 02/08 (H), W 3-1 (Isma 2, Susaeta), and 09/08 (A), L 2-1 (Muniain) - see separate details. Start training locally in Zubieta, crossing the border to Hendaia, France for first match against Les Eglantins 13/07, W 0-15 (Ifrán 3, Agirretxe 3, Llorente 4, Pardo 2, Carlos Martínez, Ros, Iker Hernández). Played Eibar in Azpeitia 18/07 (Aranburu testimonial), W 3-0 (Llorente, Griezmann, Prieto), then back to France to play against Olympique Lyon in San Juan de Luz 21/07, D 1-1 (Briand / Griezmann), then Girondins Bordeaux in Irún 28/07, L 1-0. Faced Zaragoza in Bergara 31/07, W 2-1 (agirretxe 2 / Fran González), then off to Italy to train between 2 and 12 August, with games against Modena 05/08, W 0-1 (Ifrán), Parma 08/08, L 2-0, Varese 10/08, W 2-4 (Griezmann 2, Agirretxe, Zurutuza), and Siena 11/08, L 1-0.
13 Jul - 11 Aug Sevilla summer programme
Training locally again in July, and arranged games against regional opposition, Roteña 13/07, W 0-6 (Maduro, Alex Rubio 2, 1 pen, Rabello, Trochowski, Manu pen), Arcos 21/07, W 0-6 (Babá, Trochowski, Rakitic, Acosta, Rabello, Manu) and San Fernando 22/07, L 2-1 (Romaric), and then visited Girona 25/07 (Costa Brava trophy), W 0-1 (Babá) and Córdoba 01/08, L 1-0 (Pedro).Called off participation in tournament in Cologne 10-15 July due to lack of guarantees for payment, but went to Germany anyway to play Borussia Mönchengladbach on 04/08, D 0-0. Returned to Spain for their Antonio Puerta memorial trophy, this year on 08/08 against Deportivo, W 2-0 (Negredo, Trochowski), and then back to Germany to play Mainz 05 on 11/08, D 3-3 (Manu, Negredo 2).
14 Jul - 11 Aug Betis summer programme
China tour cancelled due to lack of guarantees of payment, so start locally with game at Olímpica Valverdeña 14/07, W 0-6 (Molina pen, Salva Sevilla, Rubén Castro 3, Juan Carlos), then San Fernando 21/07, W 0-1 (Molina). On to Germany to play Sandhausen 28/07, W 0-4 (Rubén Castro 3, 1 pen, Molina), Stuttgart 03/08, D 2-2 (Rubén Castro, Juan Carlos), Hoffenheim 05/08, L 2-1 (Rubén Castro), Nuremburg 10/08, W 0-1 (Molina), and Friburg 11/08, L 1-0.
15 Jul - 5 Aug Rayo Vallecano summer programme
Returned from vacations on 9th July, with first game at RSD Alcalá on 15/07, W 0-3, Delibasic, Adrián, Juli pen). Pre-season "stage" in Holland / Belgium after that, with games against Zulte Waregem 21/07, L 2-0, Gante 22/07, L 2-0, Utrecht 27/07, W 0-1 (Lass), and Nijmegen 28/07, W 1-2 (Piti, Van Eijden og). Back to play Mirandés 05/08, D 0-0, then took part in Cádiz's Ramon de Carranza trophy, losing the final to Nacional Madeira - see below for details. Hosted second Vallecas trophy,which was against Al-Ain (UAE) on 29/08, L 1-2 (Ismael, Aziz Fayed / Quero).
16 Jul - 11 Aug Zaragoza summer programme
Pre-season training down in Costa Ballena near Cádiz, with matches against local teams Roteña 16/07, W 0-4 (Pinter, Zuculini, Víctor Rodríguez, Héctor Otín), CD Rota 17/07, W 0-4 (José Mari, Ortí pen, Pinter, Joel), Atlético Sanluqueño 21/07, L 1-0 and Arahal 24/07, W 0-8 (Montañés, Goni, Fran González, Ortí 2, Kevin Lacruz, Gassama 2). Played Real Sociedad in Bergara 31/07, L 2-1 (Agirretxe 2 / Fran González), and visit Numancia 03/08, L 2-0 (Del Pino, Cedric), and Osasuna (in Tafalla) 08/08, L 1-0 (Llorente). Returned to Zaragoza afterwards to host Carlos Lapetra trophy against Espanyol 11/08, D 1-1 (Apoño pen / Verdú pen - Zaragoza won 5-4 pso).
17 Jul - 28 Aug Málaga summer programme
Back in training on 06/07, and spent next 3 weeks in Alicante and Málaga, with matches at Horadada 17/07, W 2-4 (Seba, Toulalan, Rondón, Duda), and Xerez 21/07, L 2-0 (José Marí, Maldonado). Off then on tour to Venezuela, with games against Zamora de Barinas 26/07, W 0-3 (Maresca, Buonanotte, Juanmi) and Caracas 29/07, D 2-2 (Rondón, Weligton). Have arranged games at Juventus 04/08, L 2-0 (Matri 2), and Olympiacos 07/08, D 3-3 (Papazoglou og, Eliseu, Seba). Returned home to play their Costa del Sol trophy against Everton on 11/08, W 1-0 (Weligton), then have Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos 22/08 (H), W 2-0 (Demichelis, Eliseu), and 28/08 (A), D 0-0. 18 Jul - 11 Aug Espanyol summer programme
As usual, start training in Catalunya, with games against Palamós 18/07, W 0-3 (Dani Nieto 2, Wakaso), Olot 21/07, W 1-3 (Cristino og, Alvaro, Sergio García), and Perelada 28/07, W 0-2 (Tejera, Alfonso). New Catalan Super Cup against city rivals Barcelona on 31/07 was cancelled (see separate section), so fitted in a game against Nàstic 31/07, W 1-2 (Alvaro, Alfonso). Back from holidays on 2 July, and will go to Segovia from 6 to 14 July. On to Belgium afterwards with matches against KV Brugues 20/07, W 1-5 (Víctor Vázquez / Miku, Rafa, Colunga 2, Sarabia), Mechelen 22/07, L 3-0, then Waalwijk 28/07, L 1-0. Took part in Recreativo's Colombino trophy 3-5 Aug together with Sporting Lisbon, At. Tetuán and Recre which they won - see below for details - then visited Torino 09/08, L 2-1 (Sarabia), and Lazio 11/08, W 0-1 (Pedro León).
20 Jul - 11 Aug Deportivo summer programme
Arranged friendlies against local opposition, Viveiro 20/07, W 0-5 (Vázquez, Bodipo, Riki 2, Bruno Gama), Racing Vilalbés22/07, W 0-1 (Bruno Gama), Ponferradina 25/07, W 1-0 (Riki), Sporting Gijón 28/07 in Ribadeo, L 1-4 (Saúl / Bilic, Trejo, Sangoy 2), and Lugo 01/08, W 0-1 (Insúa). Stayed in Marienfeld in Germany at first, with fixtures against Eintracht Braunchsweig 20/07, D 1-1 (Jonas), and Rödinghausen 22/07, W 0-4 (Jonas, Piatti, Carlos Gil, Feghouli), Returned to host own Naranja trophy, this time a charity match for victims of local forest fires against Porto 28/07, D 1-1 (Jonas / Lucho González - Valencia won pso), then travelled to Indonesia to play a national selection 04/08, W 0-5 (Piatti, Alcácer 2, Ricardo Costa, Pablo). Back again to play presentation match against Tottenham in Mestalla on 09/08, W 2-0 (Jonas, Feghouli), and then visited Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on 11/08, L 4-2 (Piatti, Pablo).
21 Jul - 11 Aug Villarreal summer programme
Still picking up the pieces after first and second teams relegated last season. 21 Jul - 31 Aug Atlético Madrid summer programme
Start training 04/07, with opener against regional side Segoviano 21/07, W 1-2 (Raúl García, Godín). Inivited to Celta's Ciudad de Vigo trophy 25/07, L 1-0 (Bermejo), and hosted match against Alianza Lima 28/07, W 3-0 (Arda, Borja, Pedro). Then off to South America, with matches against Nacional Medellín 01/08, W 1-2 (Kader, Falcao), and in Costa Rica against Deportivo Saprissa 04/08, D 0-0. Participated in Deportivo's Teresa Herrera trophy on 11/08, which they lost on penalties - see below. Took part in the European Supercup (as Europa League champions) against Champions League winners Chelsea on 31/08, W 1-4 (Cahill / Falcao 3, Miranda), and qualify automatically for this season's league stage of the Europa League (see separate sections).
22 Jul - 30 Aug Levante summer programme
Euro-Levante will be playing in the Europa League for the first time in their history this year, with play-off games at the end of August. They began the pre-season in La Manga del Mar Menor, with a first match there against Deportivo Minera, W 0-2 (Michel, Koné), and then Almería 22/07, L 3-0 (Charles, Jony, Ulloa). Then played regional side Burriana 27/07, W 0-3 (Roger, Koné, Juanlu), and took part in a triangular tournament 28/07 against Huesca (0-0) and hosts CD Teruel (1-1 - Koné). Visited Perugia 01/08, W 0-2 (Koné, Juanlu), and then stayed in Italy to face Genoa 07/08, W 0-1 (Barkero), and Pescara 08/08, D 0-0. Met local rivals Villarreal in Ceramica Trophy 11/08, L 2-1 (Nikos og, Trigueros / Angel), and then E-League matches against Motherwell, 23/08 (A), W 0-2 (Juanlu, El Zhar), and 30/08 (H), W 1-0 (Gekas) - see separate section.
24 Jul - 29 Aug Barcelona summer programme
First pre-season match at Hamburg on 24/07, W 1-2 (Arslan / Dani Alves, Deulofeu). then went to Tangiers to play Raja Casablanca on 28/07, W 0-8 (Alexis 2, Messi 3, Alves pen, Sergi Gómez, Deulofeu). New Catalan Super Cup against Espanyol 31/07 was called off due to acumulation of fixtures. Arranged to play four more friendlies, in Paris against PSG 04/08, D 2-2 (Ibrahimovic pen, Camara / Rafinha, Messi pen), in Gothenberg against Manchester United 08/08, D 0-0, won 2-0 pso, in Bucharest against Dynamo Bucharest 11/08, W 0-2 (Messi, Afellay), and their own Gamper tournament, against Sampdoria on 20/08, L 0-1. Took part in Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid 23/08, W 3-2 (Pedro, Messi pen, Xavi / Ronaldo, Di María), and 29/08, L 2-1 (Higuain, Ronaldo / Messi) - see separate section.
24 Jul - 29 Aug Real Madrid summer programme
Pre-season match in Tangiers against Atlético Tetuán called off, so played at Oviedo instead, 24/07, W 1-5 (Lucas, Denis, Granero, Di María 2). Next up Portugal to play Benfica in Eusebio Cup 27/07, L 5-2 (Javi García, Witsel, Enzo Pérez 2, Carlos Martins / Callejón 2). Travelled once again to USA, where they played LA Galaxy 02/08, W 1-5 (Higuaín, Di María, Callejón, Morata, Jesé), then Mexico's Santos Laguna (in Las Vegas) 05/08, W 2-1 (Xabi Alonso, Khedira), AC Milan (in New York) 08/08, W 5-1 (Di María, Ronaldo 2, Ramos, Callejón / Robinho), and Celtic in Philadelphia 11/08, W 2-0 (Callejón, Benzema), all in the so called World Football Challenge. Ending with Spanish Super Cup v Barcelona 23/08, L 3-2 (Pedro, Messi pen, Xavi / Ronaldo, Di María), and 29/08, W 2-1 (Higuain, Ronaldo / Messi) - see below.
31 Jul Catalan Cup and Super Cup
New format was proposed this year. Barcelona and Espanyol due to play a newly denominated "Catalan Super Cup" in the Montjuic Olympic stadium in Barcelona on 31st July. The "Copa Catalunya" final was to be played at the same venue earlier in the evening between Nàstic and Manlleu. However Barça said they could only put out a B team due to fixture congestion, and Espanyol refused to reschedule the game to a later date. As a result the Catalan Federation called the whole thing off.
1 - 12 Aug Valladolid summer programme
Last team to finish season, winning promotion in play-offs, so return later than most. Spending a few days in August in Mondaríz, Pontevedra, facing Sporting Gijón in Luarca 01/08, D 1-1 (Carmelo / Javi Guerra - Valladolid won pso), then crossing the border to play matches against Portuguese sides Beira Mar 06/08, D 0-0, Paços de Ferreira 09/08, L 4-0, and Rio Ave 12/08, L 2-1 (Javi Guerra).
2 - 30 Aug Europa League play-off rounds
Athletic Bilbao finished runners up to Barcelona in the cup this season, and they entered the competition at the third qualifying round stage. Opponents were Croatia's Slaven Koprivnica, who beat Portadown in the previous round. First leg 02/08, W 3-1 (Isma 2, Susaeta), 2nd leg 09/08, L 2-1 (Muniain). They joined sixth placed Levante in the play-off round 23/08 and 30/08. Athletic played Helsinki, first match at home, W 6-0, and Levante play Motherwell, first match away, W 0-2.Return legs: Fifth placed Atlético Madrid qualify directly for the league stage as defending champions. 3 - 5 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
48th edition of Recreativo Huelva's prestigious summer competition. Last year they switched to a one match format, but this season it was back to a knock-out competition between four teams, Recre, Cádiz, Sporting Lisbon and Moroccan champions Atlético Tetuán.

10/11 Aug Ramón de Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Competition entering its 58th edition. Once again club attracted top flight competition for their famous tournament, even though they failed to win promotion out of the second division B. Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano and Portugal's Nacional de Madeira were invited to join their hosts.
Semi-final matches, 10/08: Cádiz 3 - Rayo 6 (Delibasic 2, Juli, Lass, Adrián, Nono); Osasuna 1 (Sola) - Nacional 2;

11 Aug Teresa Herrera Trophy, La Coruña
Deportivo celebrated the 67th edition of their summer trophy, this time with Atlético Madrid as the invited team. Depor also celebrating their return to top flight. Match ended 2-2 (Valerón, Bruno Gama / Koke, Falcao), Hosts won 4-3 on penalties.
15 Aug Spain friendly match
Spain travelled to Puerto Rico for a pre-season warm up prior to the start of the World Cup qualifiers. W 1-2 (Cazorla, Fàbregas). See separate section for more details.
20 Aug Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
47th edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament. Early start to season causing problems with dates, but finally set for 20th August against Sampdoria. Between league and supercup games, Tito Vilanova put out a side full of reserves, and they losty 0-1, Soriano getting the only goal for the Italians in the first minute.
22 and 28 Aug Champions' League play-off round
Málaga made it up to the fourth Champions League spot for the first time in their history, and they had to play a qualifying tie over two legs. Opponents were Greece's Panathinaikos, at home on 22/08, W 2-0 (Demichelis, Eliseu), and away on 28/08, D 0-0. See separate section for details.
23 and 29 Aug Spanish Super Cup
Once again Real Madrid and Barcelona met in this two leg fixture, although this time Madrid are the league champions and Barça the cup winners. The Catalans won last season, but Madrid had won the four meetings before that. The first leg was in the Nou Camp, 3-2 (Pedro, Messi pen, Xavi / Ronaldo, Di María), and the return was in the Bernabeu, 2-1 (Higuain, Ronaldo / Messi). Madrid won on the away goal rule. 31 Aug European Super Cup
Spanish presence yet again, this time Atlético Madrid as Europa League winners. Their opponents were Chelsea, who won the Champions League.
Chelsea 1 (Cahill) - Atlético 4 (Falcao 3, Miranda). Atlético champions for second time in three seasons.
26 Sep XXXIV Santiago Bernabeu trophy
