Pre-season Fixtures

As usual there will be an intensive programme of pre-season matches, starting early July and going on beyond the 18th August, when the league season begins again this year. We set out below the most important games involving La Liga clubs, and will be publishing regular updates when more information is known. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. See also friendly fixtures section for sundry matches which are taking place during the league season. 21 Jun - 13 Jul Under 20 World Cup
Last season's under 19 squad took part in the under 20 World Cup, which is being played in Turkey this year. Spain came top of their group after winning their three games against USA, Ghana and France, beat Mexico 2-1 in the last 16, but then lost 0-1 to Uruguay in the quarter finals. 13 Jul - 11 Aug Mallorca summer programme
Despite relegation have decided to return to Oosterbeek, Holland for the third year running. Fixtures against FC Cologne 13/07, D 2-2 (Maroh, Ujah / Aki Ienaga, Javi Márquez), NEC Nijmegen 16/07, W 0-2 (Alfaro, Alex Merino), Achiles 19/07, W 1-3 (Gerard Moreno pen, Alfaro, Alex Moreno), Lokeren 21/07, W 0-1 (Casadesús) and Leeuwarden 23/07. W 0-1 (Sastre). Back to Spain to play Lugo (A) 02/08, D 2-2 (Agus og, Laro Setién / Víctor, Nsue), Ponferradina (A) 04/08 W 1-2 (Rueda / Alfaro, Pereira), then their own Ciutat de Parma trophy (H) on 11/08 against Recreativo Huelva, D 2-2 (Alfaro, Víctor / Alexander 2), Recre won pso 4-5. Villarreal had been pencilled earlier, but the invitation was withdrawn after fans objected, still upset after the East coast side agreed to replace them when they were thrown out of the E-League for financial reasons two seasons ago.
14 Jul - 6 Sep Valencia summer programme
Spending first 10 days in Speyer, Germany, with fixtures against Karlsruhe 14/07, L 2-1 (Biezen, Nazarov pen / Jonathan Viera), Mannheim 17/07, D 0-0, and Stuttgart 20/07, L 1-0 (Schwaab). Taking part in the International Champions Cup in USA this summer, playing a first match against AC Milan at the Mestalla stadium 27/07, L 1-2 (Parejo / Robinho, De Jong) before travelling to New York, where they played Inter Milan 04/08, W 4-0 (Banega, Viera 2, Jonas). Then went on to Miami for finals - opponents for 5th/6th place were 06/08 Everton, W 1-0 (Michel). See below for more details. Returned to Spain for their own Trofeo Naranja (Orange trophy), which was held in the Mestalla stadium 10/08 against Michel's Olympiacos, W 2-1 (Banega, Postiga / Fuster), and have been inivted to Valladolid's presentation game 06/09.
16 Jul - 29 Aug Sevilla summer programme
Pre-season training began as always in Rota, Costa Ballena, with a match against regional side San Fernando on 16/07, W 1-4 (Reyes 2, Marin 2). Then flew to South America to take part in the "Copa Euroamerica", with fixtures against Universidad Católica in Chile 20/07, W 0-2 (Marin, Jairo), Atlético Nacional Medellín in Colombia 23/07, D 1-1 (Coke), but lost pso, and Barcelona de Guayaguil in Ecuador 27/07, W 1-3 (Nico Pareja, Jairo, Bacca). Returned to Europe to play in the qualifying round of the Europa League against Mladost Podgorica 01/08 (H) W 3-0 (Bacca, Perotti pen, Carriço), and took part in Cádiz's Ramón de Carranza trophy 03/08, which they won - see below. Europa League second leg in Montenegro 08/08, W 1-6 (Vitolo, Rusescu 2, Rabello, Coke 2 - see separate section), then travelled to UK to play Manchester United 09/08 in the Rio Ferdinand testimonial, W 1-3 (Valencia / Vitolo, Marin, Rabello). Drawn against Slask Wroclaw in the Europa League, first leg 22/08 (H), W 4-1 (Rakitic, Marin 2, Gameiro) and second leg 29/08 (A), W 0-5 (Rakitic, Bacca 2, Jairo, Perotti).
17 Jun - 10 Aug Málaga summer programme
Schuster has taken his new squad to Bitburg in Germany, where he went in the past with Getafe and Xerez. Fixtures during the "stage" against Racing Genk 17/07, W 0-1 (Duda pen), and Kaller 19/07, W 1-7 (Baptista, Seba, Samu, Juanmi 3, Sergi Darder), then Galatasaray 21/07, D 3-3 (Santa Cruz, Anderson, Duda pen), Glencerbirligi 25/07, L 1-0, and Augsburg 27/07, W 0-1 (Jesús Gámez). Return to Spain to play at Algeciras centenary 30/07, W 0-4 (Duda pen, Portillo pen, Cristian, Seba), and also firmed up friendlies at Wydad Casablanca 03/08 (part of Anderson agreement), W 0-1 (Fabrice) and Aston Villa 10/08. 17 Jul - 10 Aug Getafe summer programme
Training at first in Segovia, and have presentation match at home against Brighton 17/07, L 0-1. Then on to Ermelo, Holland, where they arranged fixtures against AZ Alkmaar 21/07, L 3-0, Groningen 24/07, W 1-3 (Colunga, Diego Costa, Lacen), Heracles 26/07, L 1-0, and Feyenoord 28/07, L 3-1 (Gavilán). On to Corsica to play Sporting Bastia 03/08 D 0-0, then visited neighbours Rayo in the Vallecas trophy 07/08, D 1-1 (Larrivey / Miku), lost pso 4-2, and were invited to play Zaragoza 10/08 in their own presentation match, D 1-1 (Ortí / sarabia pen), Zaragoza won pso 4-3.During the international break they visited neighboues Alcorcón for the Puchero trophy, L 6-1 (Pacheco pen, Prendes 2, Buchanan, Iribas, Fran García / Diego Castro).

Pre-season training in the Pyrenees, with a friendly game against a Vall d'Aran selection 19/07, W 0-13 (Thievy, Stuani 3, Cristian Gómez 3, Sergio García 2, Mattioni, Wakaso, Lanzarote, Forlín). Trip to play Raja Casablanca in Morocco postponed, so played neighbours Sabadell (A) 27/07, L 2-1 (Collantes 2 / Víctor Sanchez), and then went on to visit Algeria's Constantine 30/07, D 2-2 (Stuani, Lanzarote). In August play Montpellier (in Beziers) 02/08, D 0-0, Girona (Costa Bravo trophy) 07/08, W 0-2 (Stuani 2), and Tottenham Hotspur (A) on 10/08, D 1-1 (Soldado pen / David López). Game against Al Ittihad in Tripoli 12/08 called off for security reasons. Finally were guests at local club Vilassar de Mar's 75th Anniversary on 21/08, D 0-0, and host their own Ciutat de Barcelona trophy 05/09 against West Ham United.
20 Jul - 10 Aug Rayo Vallecano summer programme
Started against local opposition RSD Alcalá 20/07, W 0-1 (Saballs), then to England to play Notts County 23/07, D 2-2 (Adrián 2), MK Dons 24/07, L 4-3 (Mojica 2, Adrián pen), Millwall 27/07, L 1-0 (Morison pen) and Portsmouth 28/07, W 0-2 (Saballs, Adrián). Brief visit to Portugal tp play Académica Coimbra 04/08, L 2-1 (Trashorras pen) before hosting local rivals Getafe 07/08 (Vallecas trophy), D 1-1 (Larrivey / Miku), won pso 4-2, and invited to play Tenerife 10/08 in their 43rd Teide trophy, L 5-0 (Ayoze, Cristo Martín, Chechu Flores, Aday, Guillem Martí).
20 Jul - 1 Aug Under 19 European Championship
Spain's under 19 side are looking to complete a "hat-trick" in Lithuania after winning the under 19 title twice in a row. Opponents at the group stage are Portugal 20/07, W 1-0 (Sandro), Lithuania 23/07, W 0-2 (Iker 2) and Holland 26/07, W 3-2 (Sandro, Vadillo, Fede Vico). Qualified for semi-finals as top of group, but lost 1-2 after extra time to France 29/07 (José Rodríguez pen). See separate section for details.

Training in San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia, and have matches against Valladolid B 20/07, W 8-0 (Lolo, Ebert 3, Vadet, Omar, Larsson, Bergdich), Huracán 24/07, W 1-2 (Valiente, Manucho), Elche 27/07, L 1-2 (Oscar / Cristian, Generelo), Almería 28/07, W 0-2 (Manucho, Rukavina), Albacete 30/07, W 1-4 (Javi Guerra), Sporting Gijón 03/08 in Luarca, D 1-1 (Javi Guerra / Bernardo), won pso 2-1, Cagliari (A), D 0-0, and Osasuna (A) 10/08, D 1-1 (Omwu / Rueda). Travelled to play Brighton in England 27/07, W 1-3 (Barnes / Cani, Pereira, Pedro Ríos), then stayed at La Manga Club, Mar Menor (Murcia), with ties at the local installations against Almería 31/07, L 0-1 (Verza pen), and Granada 03/08, D 1-1 (Hernán Pérez / Piti). Hosted their own 14th Trofeo Cerámica against Fiorentina, 08/08, W 2-0 (Hernán Pérez, Jonathan Pereira), and finished pre-season with game at Sporting Gijon 11/08, W 1-4 (Carmona / Aquino, Cani, Perbet 2).
20 Jul - 8 Aug Levante summer programme
Caparrós taking his players to Isla Canela, Huelva, where they have arranged fixtures against San Roque de Lepe 20/07, W 0-2 (Barral, Rodas), Ayamonte 21/07, W 0-3 (Barral, Morales, Angel), Córdoba 23/07, D 0-0, and Benfica (in Faro) 26/07, L 2-1 (Lima 2 / El Zhar). Hosted their own Ciutat de Valencia trophy against Hellas Verona 01/08, W 2-1 (Iborra pen, Ivanschitz), played local rivals Teruel 04/08, W 0-6 (Iborra pen, El Zhar 2, Barral pen, Roger, Ivanschitz), and were invited to play in Recreativo's Colombino trophy which they won, beating Olhanense 2-1 07/08 (El Zhar, Barral), and then 08/08 winning the final against Pescara 2-0 (Héctor, Angel) - see below for details.
20 Jul - 28 Aug Barcelona summer programme
First pre-season game against Lechia Gansk scheduled for 20/07, but postponed to 30/07 after announcement of illness of coach Tito Vilanova. Revised programme, friendly matches in Europe as follows: 24/07: Bayern Munich (A), L 2-0 (Lahm, Mandzukic), 27/07: Valerenga, Norway (A), W 0-7 (Alexis, Tello, Messi, Dos Santos, Dongou 2, Román), 30/07: Lechia Gdansk (A), D 2-2 (Sergi Roberto, Messi). Returned to Barcelona to play their own Gamper tournament 02/08 against Santos (part of Neymar agreement), W 8-0 (Messi, Leo og, Alexis, Pedro, Cesc 2, Adriano, Dongou), and then went on tour to Far East, stopping off for a "Peace Tour" visit to Cisjordania and Tel Aviv 3-4 Aug before playing games against a Thailand national XI in Bangkok on 07/08, W 1-7 (Neymar, Messi 2, Pedro 3, Alexis) and a Malysian combination in Kuala Lumpur on 10/08, W 1-3 (Cesc, Neymar, Piqué). Taking part in Spanish Super Cup against Atlético Madrid 21/08, D 1-1 (Villa / Neymar) and 28/08, D 0-0 - see separate section.
21 Jul - 10 Aug Elche summer programme
Second division champions started off against Ontinyent 21/07, W 1-4 (Powel, Coro, Cristian, Albacar pen), and played Valladolid in Murcia 27/07, W 1-2 (Oscar / Cristian, Generelo). Presentation game in Martinez Valero stadium against Benfica 31/07, L 1-3 (Stevanovic / Rodrigo 3), and then invited to play neighbours Hércules in Ciudad de Alicante trophy 03/08, D 1-1 (Assulin / Coro), won pso 1-4. Last pre-season match at Murcia, 10/08, W 0-1 (Coro pen).
21 Jul - 29 Aug Real Madrid summer programme
Were going to take part in a tournament hosted by Galatasaray in Turkey, but that was replaced by fixtures at Bournemouth 21/07, W 0-6 (Cristiano 2, Khedira, Higuaín, Di María, Casemiro), Olympique Lyon 24/07, D 2-2 (Grenier, Lisandro / Morata pen, Casemiro), and against Paris Saint Germain in Gothenburg, Sweden on 27/07, W 0-1 (Benzema). Then flew out to USA to participate in International Champions Cup, where they started against LA Galaxy in Phoenix on 01/08, W 3-1 (Di María, Benzema 2 / Villarreal), followed by matches in LA 03/08 v Everton, W 2-1 (Ronaldo, Özil / Jelavic), and the final in Miami 07/08 against Mourinho's Chelsea, W 3-1 (Marcelo, Ronaldo 2 / Ramires) - see below for more. Stayed in USA after to play Inter Milan in Saint Louis 10/08, W 0-3 (Kaká, Ronaldo, Alvarez og) before returning to Spain to play their own Bernabeu trophy against Raúl's Al-Sadd 22/08, W 5-0, and the Teresa Herrera trophy against Deportivo 29/08, W 0-4 (Kaká 2, Morata, Casemiro) - see below for details of both.
21 Jul - 28 Aug Atlético Madrid summer programme
Trained locally as usual in Los Angeles de San Rafael ending with a first friendly game against Numancia in Burgo de Osma on 21/07, W 2-4 (Palanca 2 / Costa 2, Aquino, Baptistao). Then travelled to South America to participate in Euroamericana Cup (Sevilla & Porto also taking part from Europe), with matches against Estudiantes in Buenos Aires, Argentina 27/07, L 1-0 (Zapata), Sporting Cristal in Lima, Peru 31/07, W 0-1 (Mario) and Nacional de Montevideo in Uruguay 04/08, W 0-2 (Baptistao 2). Visit Las Palmas 10/08 for their presentation match, W 0-2 (Villa, Cristian Rodríguez) and playing the Spanish Supercup this summer as Copa del Rey champions, with games against Barcelona 21/08, D 1-1 (Villa / Neymar), and 28/08, D 0-0. 23 Jul - 10 Aug Zaragoza summer programme
Paco Herrera took his squad to Alcalá de la Selva, where they will played local side CD Teruel 23/07, W 0-6 (Luis García, Montañés, Laguardia, Víctor, Ortí 2). Then played Athletic Bilbao in Sestao 31/07, W 1-4 (Toquero / Cidoncha, Luis García, Barkero, Diego Suárez), and visited Numancia (A) 03/08 L 1-0 (Del Pino) and Osasuna (in Tudela) 06/08, L 2-1 (Onwu, Cejudo / Víctor), before returning home for their presentation match against Getafe 10/08, D 1-1 (Ort'i / Sarabia pen), W pso 4-3.
24 Jul - 10 Aug Celta summer programme
Training in Mondariz until late July, with friendly at Coruxo 24/07, W 0-1 (Augusto). Were invited to play in Porto's presentation match 28/07, L 1-0 (Jackson), then hosted their own Quinocho trophy against Southampton 03/08, D 0-0, won pso 4-1. Played Sporting Gijón in Villalba 07/08, L 0-1 (Santi Jara), then went on to play Portugal's Maritimo 10/08, L 1-0.
24 Jul - 10 Aug Almería summer programme
Like Granada and Elche, they will begin training in Pinatar, Murcia. Matches arranged against Águilar 24/07, W 0-3 (Rubén Suárez pen, Jonathan, Raúl García), Valladolid 28/07, L 0-2 (Manucho, Rukavina), Villarreal (in La Manga) 31/07, W 0-1 (Verza pen), Murcia 02/08, W 2-3 (Mauro 2 / Verza pen, Alcalá og, Rubén), and La Hoya 03/08, W 1-2 (Rodri, Aleix Vidal). 27 Jul - 7 Aug International Champions Cup, USA
Eight teams including Real Madrid and Valencia are competiting in the competition this summer. Sides have been split in to two groups, with Real Madrid, Juventus, Everton & LA Galaxy in the West group and Valencia, AC Milan, Inter Milan & Chelsea in the East group. First round games as follows: 27/07 (in Valencia): Valencia 1 (Parejo) - AC Milan 2 (Robinho, De Jong); 31/07: Juventus 1 - Everton1 (5-6 pso) (in San Francisco); 01/08: Inter Milan 0 - Chelsea 2 in (Indianapolis); 01/08: Real Madrid 3 (Di María, Benzema 2) - LA Galaxy 1 (Villarreal) (in Phoenix).

The winners and the losers of each group played each other to decide group placings as follows: in Los Angeles 03/08, Real Madrid 2 (Ronaldo, Özil) - Everton 1 (Jelavic), and Juventus 1 - LA Galaxy 3, and in New York 04/08, Chelsea 2 - AC Milan 0 and Valencia 4 (Banega, Viera 2, Jonas) - Inter Milan 0.

They then all entered a champions round in Miami to decide 1st to 8th rankings, with ties as follows:

1 - 29 Aug Europa League play-off rounds
Three Spanish teams are taking part in the Europa League this season, fifth placed Valencia, who qualify directly for the league stage, seventh placed Betis, who enter at the play-off stage at the end of August, and ninth placed Sevilla, who benefit from the European bans handed out to Málaga & Rayo to take the last spot, coming in to the competition at the third qualifying stage. 48th edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament. Played earlier than usual against Brazil's Santos as part of the Neymar agreement. W 8-0 (Messi, Leo og, Alexis, Pedro, Cesc 2, Adriano, Dongou). Neymar played all the second half, made a goal for Cesc and hit the crossbar.
3 Aug LIX Ramón de Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Finally agreed that this year's tournament would be a triangular match between hosts Cádiz, Sevilla and Morocco's Atlético Tetuán. Results: Sevilla 1 - Tetuán 0 (Medel); Cádiz 1 - Sevilla 1 (Perotti - Sevilla won pso); Cádiz 0 - Tetuán 1. Sevilla provlaimed champions for 7th time.

Barcelona are playing in the Spanish Super-Cup once again as league champions, although this time their rivals will be Atlético Madrid, last season's cup winners. First leg took place in Madrid on 21/08, D 1-1 (Villa / Neymar), with the return in the Nou Camp on 28/08, D 0-0. Barça won trophy on away goal rule.
22 Aug XXXV Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Guests this time at the 35th edition of Real Madrid's Bernabeu trophy were Qatar's Al-Sadd, the team which ex club captain Raúl now plays for. Due to lack of dates the fixture took place once the regular season had started. Raúl played a half for each side, and started off the scoring in a 5-0 win for Madrid, the other scorers Isco, Benzema pen, Jesé 2.

29 Aug Teresa Herrera Trophy, La Coruña
Real Madrid accepted Deportivo's invitation for this season's Teresa Herrera trophy (the 68th in their history), and waived their fee in the light of Depor's financial problems. Game took place after the regular season has begun, with Madrid winning 0-4 (Kaká 2, Morata, Casemiro).
30 Aug European Super Cup
For once there was no Spanish club taking part, although there was a fascinating clash between two old rivals as managers Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho led their new clubs Bayern Munich and Chelsea in to this match which this season took place in Prague, with two Spaniards on the scoresheet. Bayern 2 (Ribéry, Javi Martínez) - Chelsea 2 (Torres, Hazard). Bayern won pso 5-4.
