1-0. 19. Sandro. Controlled long José Rodríguez pass and turned shot past Varela.

Spain started the defence of their under 19 European title with a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Lithuania. The only goal came following a moment of inspiration between José Rodríguez and Sandro in the twentieth minute, the Real Madrid midfielder playing a long pass out of his own half for the Barcelona striker to control the ball and steer a shot under keeper Bruno Varela. Vadillo had missed an earlier chance for De la Fuente's side and Fede Vico came close to extending the lead later on in the first half, but Guedes and Cancelo both went close for Portugal before the break. Rubén Blanco and his defence held fast after the restart though, despite having to play with ten men for the last five minutes or so after Bellerín was sent off for a two footed tackle on Horta, and a win against the hosts on Tuesday should see them in to the semi-finals.
