Rookie referee Iglesias
Villanueva had to be escorted off the pitch at the end of the match between
Sporting Gijón and Villarreal after awarding a last minute penalty to
the visitors which led to the equaliser. The incident involved our old friend
Marchena, World Cup winner and a potential gold medalist in the diving
competition (?), but this time it seems he was genuinely held back by ex
Villarreal midfielder Eguren, albeit that Marchena did his best to make it look
worse than it was. The crowd shouldn't have been so upset though if they had
thought about it rationally (which of course one doesn't), as Iglesias had
given a controversial penalty to the locals when the ball hit Gonzalo on the
arm, had turned down a penalty appeal for a clear trip on Nilmar by Eguren, and
had sent Gonzalo off for a second bookable offence (all of which cost coach
Juan Carlos Garrido a yellow card for protesting). All of that has been
analyzed and reanalyzed by television commentators, experts in the press, etc.,
etc. Iglesias is finding out the hard way that life in the top flight isn't
going to be easy! (03.11.10) |
