World Cup 2006 - Preliminary squad

Luis Aragonés called up 33 players for an informal get together in mid-December, which should form the basis for the final squad of 23. The group contains several uncapped players, including youngsters Cesc Fábregas, Iniesta and Oleguer, as well as Brazilian born Marcos Senna. The injured Raúl and Xavi were also included, although it is still not clear whether either will be fit in time for the competition. Several names were conspicuous by their absence, the most notable of which were Luque, Orbaiz, Tamudo, Mista and Rivera. There are still seven months to go though, and any or all could still feature in Aragonés's plans. The full list was as follows:

Goalkeepers: Valdés (Barcelona), Casillas (Real Madrid), Reina (Liverpool);

Defenders: Antonio López and Pablo (Atlético Madrid), Oleguer and Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Betis), Del Horno (Chelsea), Capdevila (Deportivo), Iván Helguera, Michel Salgado and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Marchena (Valencia);

Midfielders: Cesc (Arsenal), Iniesta and Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquín (Betis), Valerón (Deportivo), De la Peña (Espanyol), Luis García and Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), Guti (Real Madrid), Albelda, Baraja and Vicente (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal);

Forwards: Reyes (Arsenal), Fernando Torres (Atlético Madrid), Munitis (Deportivo), Morientes (Liverpool), Raúl (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia).
