European Champions League 2001/2002

Once again the Spanish sides put in an excellent performance in this year's Champions League. Although Mallorca were knocked out in the first league phase, Deportivo de La Coruña, Barcelona and Real Madrid all got through to the quarter final play-offs. Deportivo lost to Bayer Leverkusen at that stage but the other two made it through to the semi-finals where they met each other for the first time in 41 years. Real Madrid won the tie after a first leg win at Barcelona, and went on to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the final for the ninth European cup title in their history. A fitting end to their centenary year.
