Pre-season Fixtures 2006/2007

As usual there was an intensive programme of pre-season matches, this year starting mid July and going on to the end of August, when the league season began again. We set out below the most important games involving first division clubs. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. 15 and 22 Jul Intertoto third round
A new format for the Intertoto cup this year with only one Spanish side competing. Villarreal take on Slovenia's Maribor for a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA cup. If they get through, they will play the qualifier on 10th and 24th Aug.
First leg: Villarreal 1 (Forlán) - Maribor 2 (Rakic, Mihelic).
Second leg: Maribor 1 (Zajc) - Villarreal 1 (Nihat).
Villarreal fail to qualify for the UEFA cup. See separate section for reports.
16 - 29 Jul Valencia summer programme (July)
Based in Ermelo, Holland for a few days in July. Played a friendly against Go Ahead Eagles on 16/07, W 1-2 (Ars / Mista, Vicente), and then faced off against Feyenoord on 21/07, W 1-2 (Baraja, Regueiro). Returned to Spain to play Charlton Athletic in presentation match at the Mestalla stadium on 29/07, W 3-1 (Morientes, Baraja, Silva / Sarondo).
17 - 28 Jul Sevilla summer programme (July)
As usual starting off locally with friendlies against regional opposition. First game against San Roque de Lepe on 17/07, W 1-5 (Kanouté 3, Luis Fabiano, Adriano), then Pilas on 21/07: W 0-4 (Kepa, Makukula, Jesuli, Puerta), Marbella on 25/07, W 0-4 (Jesús Navas 2, Bruno, Poulsen), and Chiclana on 28/07, W 0-6 (Jesús Navas 2, Kanouté 2, Makukula, Kepa).
18 - 29 Jul Under 19 European Championship
Spain's youngsters were in action again in Poland this summer, with group games against Turkey on 18/07, W 5-3, Scotland on 20/07, W 4-0, and Portugal on 23/07, D 1-1. Then a semi-final against Austria on 26/07, W 5-0, and final against Scotland on 29/7 which they won 2-1 to take the championship for the third time in five years. 18 - 29 Jul Celta summer programme (July)
Training in France at the start of the pre-season, with matches as follows: 18/07: Tottenham Hotspur in Annecy, 0-2 (Defoe 2); 20/07: Panathinaikos in Aix-les-Bains, D 1-1 (Perera); 22/07: Nice in Albertville, L 2-1 (Baiano); 26/07: PSG in Aix -les-Bains, D 1-1 (Gustavo López); 28/07, Saint Etienne, D 1-1 (Nené).
19 Jul - 2 Aug Osasuna warm up games
Play a couple of warm up games in Scotland prior to their Champions' League qualifying round. 19/07: Hearts, L 2-0; 20/07: Dunfermline, D 0-0. Then played Toulouse in Capbreton on 25/07, W 0-1 (Romeo), Stade Rennais on 28/07, D 0-0; Numancia (A) on 01/08, L 2-1 (Arruabarrena), and Zaragoza (Peralta) on 02/08, L 2-1 (Milosevic, Puñal pen / Sergio García).
19 Jul - 17 Aug Málaga summer programme
Started their pre-season playing Birmingham in Marbella on 19/07: L 4-3 (Salva 2, Morales pen / Forsell 2, Campbell, Duna). Then played regional club Cartaya on 22/07, L 0-1, Córdoba in Cartaya on 25/07, L 3-0, Olhanense in Olhan on 29/07, L 1-0; Recre in Antequera (Torcal trophy) on 05/08, D 2-2 (Cheli, Calle / Salva, Edgar - Málaga won on penalties); Marbella (City of Marbella trophy), 11/08, D 1-1 (Morales - Málaga won on penalties); Murcia on 13/08, L 1-2 (Morales / Aranda 2). Hosted Costa del Sol trophy on 17/08 against Nacional de Montevideo, L 0-1, then played Granada (A), L 3-1 (Sandro).
20 - 29 Jul Mallorca summer programme (July)
Travel to Kössen, Austria for pre-season training and a series of games as follows: 20/07: TSV Siegsdorf, Germany, W 0-15 (Maxi 2, Doni 2, Basinas 2, Víctor 2, Jonás 2, Delibasic, Ramis, Ernesto, Pereyra, Mader og); 22/07: TSG Hoffenheim, Germany, W 0-1 (Víctor); 26/07: Maccabi Haifa, L 1-2 (Doni); 29/07: 1860 Munich, L 2-1 (Víctor).
20 Jul - 14 Aug Betis summer programme

21 Jul - 3 Aug Real Madrid in Austria
Training as usual in Irding, Austria from 17th July for 20 days or so, and play friendly matches with Plymouth on 21/7, W 1-0 (Baptista - pen); Irding on 25/07, W 2-10 (Cassano 4, Baptista 3, Portillo 2, Juanfran); Fulham on 29/07, D 0-0, and Reggina (in Graz) on 03/08, W 1-0 (Raúl). Van Nistelrooy and Emerson made their debuts.
21 - 28 Jul Espanyol summer programme (July)
No China tour this year, so pre-season training at Perelada as usual, with friendly against Perelada on 21/07: W 0-5 (Julián, Pandini, Coro, Ito, Jonathan). Then play Villarreal 28/07, L 1-0,
22 Jul - 8 Aug Real Sociedad summer programme (July)
Last year went to Far East, but this season have gone to England, based around Birmingham. Fixtures as follows: 22/07, Doncaster, L 0-1; 25/07, Huddersfield, D 0-0; 28/07: Leicester City, D 0-0; 30/07: West Bromwich Albion, D 0-0.
22 Jul - 20 Aug Zaragoza summer programme
Pre-season training close to home, with friendly games as follows: 22/07: Barbastro (A), D 1-1 (Lafita); 25/07: Sabiñanigo (A), W 0-1 (Ewerthon); 29/07: Numancia (A), W 1-2 (Del Pino / Ewerthon, Oscar González); 02/08: Osasuna (Peralta), L 2-1 (Milosevic, Puñal pen / Sergio García). Went to Oosterbeek, Holland to play Heracles on 09/08, W 0-3 (Sergio García 2, Aimar), then RKC Waalwijk on 11/08, D 1-1 (Lafita), and Roda on 13/08, D 1-1 (Aimar). Back to Spain to play newly promoted Nàstic away on 17/08, W 0-1 (Morales og). Closed pre-season with friendly against Roma in Italy, D 0-0.
24 Jul - 5 Aug Recreativo summer programme
Pre-season training in Spain and matches in and around Galicia. 24/07 Villaalbés, W 0-8; 26/07 Lugo, W 1-4; 29/07 Ferrol, D 0-0; 02/08 Extremadura, D 0-0; 05/08 Málaga (Antequera), D 2-2 (Cheli, Calle / Salva Edgar); then host Colombino trophy - see below. Visited Tenerfie on 19/08, L 2-1 (Raúl, Tomy / Cazorla).
25 Jul - 18 Aug Deportivo summer programme
Deportivo La Coruña were invited to 50th anniversary match at San Roque de Lepe, in Andalusia on 25/07, which they won 0-3. Went on to play in the Guadiana International trophy in Vila Real, Portugal, versus Benfica 28/07 which they won 0-1 (Sergio) but lost Valerón to another knee injury which will keep him out for 4 months, and versus Sporting Lisbon on 29/07, L 1-0. Returned to Spain to play Ayamonte 31/07, W 1-2 (Cristian, Iago), and a Galician combination on 05/08, W 0-2 (Cristian, Riki). Teresa Herrero, and then take part in the "Copa Xunta Galicia", 18/08: Negreira (A), W 0-2 (Sergio, Cristian). Final game at Betanzos, W 0-4 (Verdú, Taborda, Juan Rodríguez, Arizmendi).
26 - 29 Jul Atlético Madrid summer programme (July)
Have arranged the following games during their stay in Germany: 26/07: Energie Cottbus, D 1-1 (Agüero); 29/07: Dinamo Dresden, D 0-0. Then on to China - see below.
27 Jul - 17 Aug Nàstic summer programme
Newly promoted side travelled to Klagenfurt in Austria for their pre-season training. Started with a triangular match on 27/07 against Treviso, W 0-1 (Pinilla) and Sudtirol, W 0-2 (Merino, Ismael), follwed by friendly against Catania on 30/07, D 0-0, then (after several cancellations and changes) versus Kuwait on 02/08, W 6-0 (Pinilla 3, Ismael 2, Matellán). Played Ascoli (H) on 09/08, W 2-0 (Matellán, Pinilla) and Villarreal (A) on 11/08, L 1-0, and presentation match against Zaragoza on 17/08, L 0-1 (Morales OG).
27 Jul - 19 Aug Levante summer programme
Pre-season training in Austria. Played Manisaspor 27/07, W 3-1 (Manchev pen, Alexis, Juanma); Maccabi PT 30/07, L 2-0; Hércules 04/08, D 0-0. Presentation match 11/08 vs Betis, D 1-1 (N'Diaye / Edu pen), then Estrella Amadora on 13/08, D 1-1 (Manchev). Go on to play Os Belenenses (A), 17/08, W 1-2 (Kapo, Manchev); and Elche (A - Trofeo Festa D'Elx), 19/08, L 1-0 (Casas).
28 Jul - 5 Aug Villarreal warm up games
Start early for Intertoto Cup, and have the following games: 28/07: Espanyol (H - part payment for transfer of Armando Sá), W 1-0 (Sergio Sánchez og); 02/08: Vilamalla, W 1-10 (Pires 2, Franco 2, Nihat, Forlán, José Marí, Gonzalo, Cani, Jordi Pérez, Marcos); 05/08: Newcastle (A), D 3-3 (Ameobi, Butt 2 / Josico, Pires, Gonzalo); 09/08: Navata (A), W 0-13 (Nihat 3, Ordoñez 3, Somoza, Gonzalo, Venta, Forlán 2, Franco, Senna); 11/08: Nàstic (H), W 1-0 (Forlán). Went on to take part in Cádiz's Carranza trophy, where they ended up third.
28 Jul - 12 Aug Barcelona summer programme
Barcelona began pre-season training in Denmark again. Played friendly game on 28/07 against Aarhus. W 0-3 (Dos Santos, Ezquerro, Schulz (OG)).
From the beginning of August off on an international tour of Mexico and USA, with matches against Tigres de Monterrey on 03/08, W 0-3 (Brisueño og, Ronaldinho, Gudjohnsen), Chivas in Los Angeles on 06/08, D 1-1 (Gudjohnsen), América de México in Houston on 09/08, D 4-4 (Márquez, Saviola, Ronaldinho pen, Eto'o), and New York Bulls on 12/08, W 1-4 (Ronaldinho 2, 1 pen, Messi, Saviola).
28 Jul - 19 Aug Getafe summer programme
First game in Spain against regional side Gimnastica Segoviana on 28/07, W 2-3 (Nacho, Manu Del Moral), then warming up in Bitburg, Germany. Games as follows: 02/08: Georgia Under 21 side, D 1-1 (Celestini); 04/08: Bayer Leverkusen, D 0-0; 06/08: Kickers Offenbach, W 0-3 (Pachón 2, Nacho); 08/08: Estella Ettelbrick, W 0-3 (Paunovic, Manu, Sánchez); 10/08: VLF Leverkusen, W 0-9 (Güiza 2, Pachón 2, Jaja 2, Manu, Albín, Sánchez); 15/08: Castilla (A), W 0-2 (Albín 2, 1 pen); 17/08: Salamanca (A), D 2-2 (both own goals). Presentation finally against city neighbours Atlético on 19/08, D 0-0.
29 Jul - 16 Aug Racing Santander summer programme
Started off with friendlies against local opposition. 29/07: Amurrio, W 0-1 (Oriol); 05/08: Cayón, W 0-3 (Moratón, Juanjo, Matabuena); 06/08: Velarde, W 0-1 (Matabuena); 09/08: Torrelavega, W 0-1 (Felipe Melo). Home to Osasuna on 13/08, W 2-0 (Juanjo 2), and played in Lasesarre trophy (see below) on 16/08. Then guests at Sporting Gijón presentation, 18/08, D 0-0 and won on penalties.
30 Jul - 21 Aug Alavés tour of USA
Piterman took the squad to his home country once again despite relegation. Matches against a Jamaican combination on 30/07, L 2-1 (Papa Thiaw pen), Romario's Miami on 03/08, W 1-2 (Romario / Arthuro, Pape Thiaw pen), and George Weah's Soccer Locker (Florida) on 06/08, W 1-2 (Weah / Gabri, Navarro). Returned to Spain to play Numancia (A) 12/08, W 3-0 (Arthuro, Astudillo, Gentil); Racing (Barakaldo) 16/08, D 1-1 (Thiago / Juanjo), and Eibar (A) 19/08, W 1-2 (Mena, Gentil). Presentation against Academica de Coimbra on 21/08, W 1-0 (Navarro).
3 - 11 Aug Espanyol summer programme (August)
Travelled to Greece to play Larissa on 03/08, D 2-2 (Fredson, Luis García) and Ergotelis Crete on 05/08, W 0-3 (Julián, Torrejón, Luis García). Trip to Italy called off and fixed up another friendly against Palermo (A) on 11/08, D 0-0. Spanish Supercup ties against Barcelona - see below. Also due to visit Terrassa for their centenary match, and will host the Ciudad de Barcelona trophy on 1st September against Lazio. Also see below.
3 - 19 Aug Athletic Bilbao summer programme
Started off in triangular tournament in Cologne, Germany on 03/08, with hosts and Middlesbrough as opponents. Athletic 1 - M'boro 0 (Etxeberría); Cologne 1 - Athletic 0; Cologne 2 - M'boro 0.
Then play Rot Weiss Essen on 06/08, W 0-1 (Yeste), Ijsselmeervogels (Spakenburg) on 08/08, W 0-3 (Alex García 2, Beñat), and on to England to play Everton on 12/08, W 0-1 (Aduriz). Returned to Spain to participate in Lasesarre trophy - see below. on 16/08. Lazio match called off, so played Almería (A) on 19/08 in Juan Rojas memorial game, W 0-3 (Prieto, Llorente, Dañobeitia).
3 - 19 Aug Real Sociedad summer programme (August)
Played Olympiakos in Greece on 03/08, L 5-1 (Stevanovic); Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal on 06/08, W 0-2 (Stevanovic, Uranga); Academica Coimbra, also in Portugal on 08/08, W 0-2 (Gerardo, Mikel Alonso). Travel to UK to play Tottenham on 12/08, L 2-1 (Defoe, Dawson / Uranga); than back to Spain to play Tolosa on 14/08, W 0-4 (Kovacevic 2, Felicio, Díaz de Cerio). Presentation of squad (no match) on 19/08.
4 -6 Aug Shanghai International Tournament
The Shanghai International Tournament took place again this year, with Atlético Madrid invited from Spain. Their opener was against Kashima Antlers from Japan on 04/08, which they won 3-1 (Torres, Agüero, Galletti). Then played Shanghai Shenhua on 06/08, winning 3-0 (Kezman 2, Agüero) to take the trophy.
4 - 18 Aug Sevilla summer programme (August)
Travelled to Japan to play Albinex Niigata on 04/08, W 0-6 (Alves, Kepa, Kanouté, Bruno, Alfaro, Makukula), and Jubilo Iwata, 05/08, W 2-3 (Makukula 2, Adriano). Took part in Colombino trophy in Huelva (9, 10 Aug) - see below, Then played Man Utd in Old Trafford on 12/08, L 3-0 (Saha, Ronaldo, Jones). Presentation match against New Zealand national side on 15/08, W 5-1 (Chevantón 3, Luis Fabiano, Alves) and visit to Las Palmas for their presentation match on 18/08, D 0-0, lost on penalties.
5 - 19 Aug Mallorca summer programme (August)
Started month playing Lorca's presentation match on 05/08, D 2-2 (Iker Begoña, Javi Rodríguez / Maxi Lopez, Pisculichi pen). Were invited to take part in a tournament hosted by Olympiakos in Athens. 09/08 vs Olympiakos, L 2-1 (Víctor); 10/08 vs Egaleo, W 1-2 (Arango 2). Hosted Ciutat de Palma trophy on 19/08, rivals were Inter Milan, L 0-1 (Maicon).
8 - 10 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
Newly promoted Recreativo hosted another of the big summer competitions, the 42nd time the tournament has taken place. Games as follows: 08/08: Recre 3 - Bolton Wanderers 2 (Calle 2, Vázquez / Nolan 2);
09/08: Sevilla 2 - Sporting Lisbon 4 (Kanouté 2 / Liedson 2, Moutinho, Yannick);
10/08: Final. Recreativo 0 - Sporting Lisbon 3 (Farnerud, Ronny, Liedson);
3/4 play-off: Sevilla 3 - Bolton 0 (Luis Fabiano 3).

8 - 19 Aug Celta summer programme (August)
Pitch in poor condition, so home fixtures had to be postponed. Played friendlies against Rio Ave in Tamiño on 08/08, L 0-2; Sporting Braga (A - Memorial Quinocho which should have been at home) on 12/08, L 2-1 (Perera); Maritimo de Funchal (A) on 15/08, W 0-2 (Jonathan, Perera); Ourense (A - Xunta Galicia cup) on 17/08: W 0-5 (Nené, Jonathan, Lucas, Perera, Gustavo López) and Beira Mar (A) on 19/08, D 0-0.
9 - 12 Aug Real Madrid in USA
Travelled to USA on 7th August to play two matches, against DC United in Seattle, Washington on 09/08, D 1-1 (Cassano), and against Real Salt Lake in Salt Lake City, Utah on 12/08, W 0-2 (Van Nistelrooy pen, Robinho).
9 and 22 Aug Champions' League third qualifying round
Valencia and Osasuna entered at this stage, with one tie over two legs in an attempt to make it through to the league stage. Valencia play Salzburg after they beat Zurich, and Osasuna have a difficult tie against Hamburg. Both play the second leg at home. See separate section for details.
09/08: First leg:
Salzburg 1 - Valencia 0; Hamburg 0 - Osasuna 0.

22/08: Second leg:
Valencia 3 - Salzburg 0 (Morientes, Villa, Silva); Osasuna 1 - Hamburg 1 (Cuéllar / De Jong). Valencia qualified, Osasuna knocked out and will play in the UEFA Cup.
11 - 13 Aug Teresa Herrera trophy, La Coruña
61st edition of the tournament scheduled again this summer, a more special event this time around given Deportivo's centenary year.
11/08: Depor 3 - Nacional de Montevideo 0 (Rodri, Sergio, Juan Rodríguez);
12/08: AC Milan 1 - Atlético Madrid 0 (Ambrosini);
13/08: 3/4 play-off: Atlético 2 - Nacional 1 (Kezman, Luccin / Garcés);
Final: Deportivo 3 - AC Milan 1 (Coloccini, Riki, Juan Rodríguez / Kaká).
Depor won the title for the 7th year in a row.
12 Aug Orange Trophy
Had problems finding dates for their annual trophy in the past, but Valencia fitted it in this pre-season match between Champions League qualifying games. Rivals were Roma this year. W 2-0, David Silva, Albelda).
12 - 15 Aug Teide Trophy
Tenerife hosted this tournament again, with guests Las Palmas, Vecindario and Lleida.
12/08: Tenerife 0 - Vecindario 1 (Xisco);
13/08: Las Palmas 1 - Lleida 0 (Nauzet Aleman);
14/08: Tenerife 1 - Lleida 2 (Sicilia / Tevenet 2);
15/08: Final Las Palmas 1 - Vecindario 1 (Darino / Xisco pen).
Las Palmas won 4-1 in penalty shoot out.
14 Aug Osasuna presentation match
Played Shakhtar Donetsk in presentation match at the Reyno de Navarra stadium between the two legs of the Champions League. W 1-0 (Soldado).
15 Aug Spain friendly match
A pre-season warm up for "la selección" prior to the start of the 2008 European qualifiers next month. Played Iceland away, D 0-0. See separate section for more details.
16 Aug Albacete presentation match
Invited Atlético Madrid this season for presentation match in Carlos Belmonte stadium. D 1-1 (Biagini / Agüero).
16 Aug Lasesarre Trophy, Barakaldo
Novel four-way tournament hosted by 2B side, with winners based on goals scored. Results:
Barakaldo 0 - Athletic Bilbao 0;
Alavés 1 - Racing Santander 1 (Thiago / Juanjo).
Racing proclaimed winners as they scored first goal.
17 and 20 Aug Spanish Supercup
Two leg fixture between league champions Barcelona and cup winners, city neighbours Espanyol. First leg played at home of cup winners, with the return three days later in the Nou Camp.
17/08: Espanyol 0 - Barcelona 1 (Giuly).

18 - 19 Aug Ramón Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Cádiz once again hosted this prestigious trophy, which this year celebrated it's 52nd edition. Although they have been relegated back to the second division, they had the usual high turn out and participation of top clubs, with neighbours Betis the first side to confirm their presence and then Real Madrid accepting an invitation. Final dates and participants depended to a certain extent on the court cases taking place in Italy, as the inital idea was to invite at least one top Italian side, but after Inter Milan and then Brazilian cup champions Flamingo pulled out, Villarreal completed the line up. Scores as follows:
18/08: Cádiz 2 - Villarreal 2 (César, Enrique / Gonzalo, Nihat- Cádiz won on penalties);
Real Madrid - Betis (Van Nistelrooy pen, Raúl, Cannavaro / Dani 2, Edu pen - Betis won on penalties).

19/08: 3/4 play-off: Villarreal 1 - Real Madrid 0 (Riquelme).
Final: Cádiz 2 - Betis 2 (Medina, Acuña / Edu, Joaquín - Cádiz won on penalties). .
19 / 20 Aug Catalonia Cup
Play this tournament again in the summer. Barcelona and Espanyol will enter directly at the semi-finals stage, with Nàstic and Lleida entering in the 6th round (quarter finals), as follows:
19/08: Quarter-finals: Balaguer 1 - Nástic 4 (Merino, Juan 2, Portillo);
20/08: Girona 1 - Lleida 1 (Nacho / Lanzarote). Lleida won 2-4 on penalties.
Dates and draw for semi-finals pending.
22 Aug Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
41st edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament took place as usual this summer. German champions Bayern Munich were the team invited this time around. Barcelona 4 - Bayern 0 (Ronaldinho, Eto'o 2, Saviola). Joan Laporte took his seat again as president after being re-elected unopposed.
23 Aug XXVIII Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Belgium's Anderlecht were Real Madrid's rivals this year for their annual presentation match. Madrid won 2-1 with 2 goals from Van Nistelrooy, with Siani getting one back for the visitors late on.
25 Aug European Supercup
All Spanish affair in Monaco this year, with European champions Barcelona taking on UEFA cup winners Sevilla. Sevilla ran out 0-3 winners with goals from Renato, Kanouté and Marseca (Pen). See separate section for details.
