First Division - Day Four

Numancia's president Francisco Rubio admitted that his dream was coming true when the team he has supported all his life Athletic de Bilbao played for the first time ever in Soria against Numancia. Rubio was not the only one with divided loyalties, manager Andoni Goikoetxea played for many years in Athletic and midfielders Nagore and Jorge Pérez are on loan from Bilbao this season. The match however did not live up to its expectations, and the game eventually petered out to a 1-1 draw after Pacheta and Urzaiz scored respectively for Numancia and Bilbao in the first half. Julen Guerrero was sent off for a second bookable offence just before half time for the first time in his career after 240 games in the top level.

Two dead ball specialists, Salva from Racing and Tsartas from Sevilla, met at the Sardinero stadium in Santander. In the end each were able to demonstrate their specialities, Tsartis opening the scoring for Sevilla from another free kick, and Salva scoring his fifth penalty of the season to take him to 'Pichichi' with six goals in all. Sevilla had no less than five Uruguayan internationals in their squad, although Valencia was favoured in goal ahead of Rabajda. Racing's new signing Rushfeldt is still waiting to start a match with Salva and Munitis in such form. Sevilla started well, with one of the Uruguayans, Olivera, adding to Tsartas's first goal with a second from a corner with a quarter of the match gone. Racing bounced back with the Salva penalty two minutes later after Hector fouled Amavisca, and Munitis pulled the sides level on the hour after another pass from Amavisca. In the end the 2-2 result appeared fair, leaving Racing 6th equal on 7 points, and Sevilla, still without a win but with 3 draws, 16th equal on 3 points.
