First Division - Day Eleven

Zaragoza moved up to second place in the league with a 2-1 victory over Alavés. Rojo was forced to make one change, bringing in Cuartero in defence for the injured Sundgren. Alavés were without Eggen and Ibon Begoña through injury, and Magno was suspended. The star of the match was once again Savo Milosevic who scored both goals for the home side, bringing his tally for the season to twelve. His first came as early as the fourth minute, Juanele laying on a pass for him after a corner, and the second came on the hour after Josete had tried to dribble and lost the ball, Milosevic running through to beat Herrera. Earlier Alavés had a chance to draw level after Juanmi brought down Kodro, but the Zaragoza keeper made up for his mistake by saving Pablo's penalty kick, his second penalty save of the season. Kodro did eventually get a goal, his first for his new club and the 101st of his long career in Spain, with a wickedly struck free kick, but Zaragoza took the victory and the three points, taking their unbeaten run at home to 12 matches, the best home record of the season.

Deportivo de La Coruña take third spot with a narrow 0-1 victory away from home at Oviedo. The two managers Luis Aragones and Jabo Irureta were old team mates at Atlético de Madrid many years ago, and teams they have managed have met on no less than fourteen occasions. This time it was Jabo who came out on top, the game being decided by a single controversial penalty scored by Djalminha in the second half. Referee Rodriguez Santiago ruled that keeper Esteban had fouled Pauleta (substituting Makaay in the second half), probably true, but as the Portuguese striker didn't fall over nobody believed it (it is normal practice to fall at the slightest touch in Spain). Esteban was so angry at letting the goal in that he blasted the ball away, unfortunately catching Depor's Víctor full in the face. Víctor was carried off to be replaced by Scaloni, who later hit the post with a long shot. Deportivo keep their unbeaten away record this season, and also continue a good run of results at Oviedo, where they haven't lost in five seasons. Oviedo move back down near the relegation zone, and are only one point ahead of 18th placed Valencia. They now have a cup match next Wednesday against second division B side Lorca.
